There is a solution to the gears breaking...DONT go off the track
haha, its called "landscaping".

They blow it on racedays, so that's ok.

Yeah, we go "offroad" sometimes. (usually NOT by choice)

Size varies??....wow.,...then maybe buy all spurs from the same company.
Ahh.. I go to many different LHSes and usually the same brand
isn't available all the time from all of them.

Quite surprised too at the size variance. Like, there's a formula
that tells you how big a gear will be @ 48dp x #teeth... but guess
some of the mfg coys aren't privvy to that!

How many cars do you have man?
please... don't ask - Lost count years ago.
Got 04R & 04PRO as usual runners, rest are 'spares'.
Run also a EvoIII... and another on the reserve bench.
2 runner M03s... and another for spare too.
...TA03s, FF02, TL01, WR02.
(.... yeah, red-n-blue-star freak. )

yup, I think so..

ok going off topic here, but what they hey...

How long have your been racing, geez?
Daddy bought me my first Tamiya in 1977.
(that's 1977, not 1997)
Yes we raced it, and more.

Sortof SNOWBALLED from there...!!

"Need?" No, never 'need'. Just 'want'.

I enjoy tuning RC cars more than actually racing them.

Specifically, I like to see what real difference each adjustment make etc etc.
Also what hopup parts are useful, what are just for looks.
And the ONLY real way to do it... is to run 2 identical cars
and change 1 aspect at a time.

Anyone who just tells you do X, Y & Z on your car to adjust it... probably
hasn't done real back-to-back testing before like that.
I prefer to know exactly what X, Y or Z each does individually.

Comes up with a lot of interesting answers too!

So yeah where did you come up with all the money for this? can you buy me a car lol

Yeah tamiya is too good ey...
$$$? haha, RC cars not really very expensive.
(Playing with 1:1 car is much MORE expensive!!)

Guess you're not working...? When you start working, not hard
to earn enough to buy cars if you don't have a life (like me).
Don't drink, don't smoke, don't go partying every weekend.

Also I don't rush out to buy "latest and greatest" - what for?
For runners I don't mind buying used cars for 100% rebuild.
Especially the ones where the guy can't get it to handle... I go
'rescue' them and make them worthy of the Duo-Star badge.

Unfortunately as a Tamiya-nut... crazy enough to buy some for show only.
This year got a 414M2 and #58291 just to look at, very nice kits.
Tempted to pickup a Surikarn... maybe later this year.
D'oh, missed out buying a 414M-WCR last year.
But hey, I prefer to have Tamiya cars hanging on the walls than
silly paintings and artwork - who understands useless art?

Back on topic...

I've had the combination of 84/35 suggested to me, giving me the same ratio as I'm running now. The spacing works out at around 31.5 mm, so I need to check I can get it to fit. My TA04 started out as the Zexel Skyline and has the standard flat alloy motor plate. The limiting factor in meshing the gears is the rear gearbox housing and the belts. I won't be doing any filing on that, but can file the motor plate to suit as much as I can.

If I can get a bigger pinion than 35, then I can also go for a bigger spur and not worry so much about the distance problem.

Yes you can find bigger pinion than 35T pinion but the problem the pinion is very rare in Australia. I need to order it overseas for it. The biggest pinion for 48 pitch is 40T.

Thanks everyone for all your help. I finally settled on 36/84 or 36/87. See you at the track.
