Coming ot think of it, what are you views about getting a 2nd hand ESC?
I know of a guy selling his used Novak SS5800 super sport brushless system. Will there be any difference in terms of performance in the ESC as compared to a new one? The SS system is very good and reliable, but I don't think it supports brushed motors (Maybe the SS+ does?). It won't run the faster brushless motors due to its limit, and it doesn't have drag brake settings. (you can get around this by settings in your radio though) I also have an SS5800 system for sale if you're interested. Cheers Tom. |

Novak released the SS+ system a little later which does support brushed motors with the limits you have stated. Read through these 2 links to see: http://www.teamnovak.com/products/br...tem/index.html http://www.teamnovak.com/products/br...rt/ss5800.html I am only informing you so you don't grab the system that doesn't support brushed motors. |
x5 Addict : Now that you've shone some light, I thin kthe one that the guy's selling is the SS without the plus... Lol..
Thank you!!!! |

I was browsing through the NOVAK website and came across the
Novak GTB Esc. It says that it has no brushed motor limit. That I can comprehend, but all it says for BL was that it is compatible with all Novak 540-size sensored brushless motors. So does that mean that I can only use a Novak sensored BL motor with the ESC, regardless of the number of turns? If so, is there any way for me to "tweak" so that the Esc can be compatible with other BL motor? |
Dont get a GTB, the LRP Sphere is a lot more reliable.
Besides GTBs have a habit of catching fire (not a joke).... |

With any ESC 2 and 2.5's turns are really for use with 5 cell not 6 cell. The 5cell Modified rules came to be because all brands overheat with low turn winds and 6 cells. Novak make solid controllers, very much equal to LRP or SP. |
I still stand by my comment that GTBs has a tendency to catch alight. Ive seen one smoke off a stock motor and one of the guys in the SMA thread had one catch a light.
Another person i know had one catch a light the other day. The GTB is probably a good esc but personally i wouldnt take the risk. Look around you rarely ever see people have problems with a sphere (and usually its because theyve abused the esc) and in sydney there are loads more Spheres than GTBs being used. |
I'm just going to put my vote in for the LRP TC Spec.
I have matched my ESC with the LRP Vector x11 3.5T and find this to be a very powerful combination. I have had my fair share of problems with two of these ESCs, but this has been resolved by replacing the capacitor on the ESC. If anyone cares, I am using 16V 4700uF caps (nothing special, they were $1.80 AUD from my local electronics store). I do however find the options for setup to be more than adequate. I'm not entirely sure on the brushed/brushless power profiles actually having much of an effect other than to make the motor hotter, but the drag brake settings have proven to be quite useful with noticeable changes between then setting options. And I can tell you now, when compared to the low end LRP ESCs, the TC Spec wins hands down in all ways (better power, more punch, more options, brushed/brushless support for down to 3 turns etc). That being said, IMHO the TC Spec could be improved by adding JST connectors for the on/off switch, capacitor and receiver connector. Whilst this doesnt appear to be much of an issue, I quickly found out that the cabling to the capacitor seems to be low quality, want to break easily and too short (not convenient in some setups as the placement of the cap is limited to how long the cables are and what chassis you're running etc). Its an excellent ESC, just a little high priced. -Mark |
