Tyres for mini

What tyres do you guys suggest for minis?
What tyres were the fast guys using at the club challenge on the weekend?
Thanks

I think brad and Michael and Ian were on Tamiya 60 D

cannon 05-08-2006 08:26 PM

Brad was on very old HPI tyres. Ian and Michael were using 60D's. They have a great rollout but lack that extra grip in the infield. I used Shimizu treaded. They have great corner grip but are small in diameter so you lose out down the straight. Except when you have matched stick packs.

Most of the speed out of corners came from diffs that are very close to locked. It is a fine art apparently to get the diffs to a point where they are legal yet provide the greatest acceleartion out of corners

For someone looking at getting into this class of racing, which kit would be best to go for, the new m03m suzuki or mo3l mini or mo3? Or just get what ever you can ger your hands on?

danjoy25 05-08-2006 09:18 PM

Get the new M03-M as looks to be a good chassis and the body is very nice and different but all the quick guys used M03-L :)

cannon 05-08-2006 10:01 PM

THe results were as follows:

1st - M03-L
2nd - M03
3rd - M03 -L
4th - M03-M

THe first and third placings were by very experienced Mini racers. Brad (2nd) hasn't raced a Mini in years and my 4th place with the M is reasonable considering I hadn't driven any type of Mini before Saturdays practice. My choice would be the M03-M more for the fact that you look a little different and more to scale than the L. I actually think the L stands for Limousine as it is that long :D :D

Cheers for the info guys. Especially for the description of the letter "L" in M03L

Buy the M like Cannon said. You can always pull the centre spacer out and run it as a SWB (like several people did at the VORTEC Titles on the weekend)
And you also get the bonus of the new toe-in rear uprights and the new front end. Which means you dont need to buy new rear uprights or the horribly expensive alloy front ones.
If you run it as a SWB you can also get a lot of inexpensive bodyshells, MWB and LWB you cant.

judging by the lap times on saturdays practice, the pits shimizu`s did the best time a 15.7 around about midday ,the tryes were 3 night meetings ,2 day meetings old, only the fronts had some tread left ,not a lot of steering.
used a set of worn 60D1s couldnt break 16sec ,nice top end,but since sma has more infield and curves than actual straight........ the shimizus r the go 4 me at sma for the next coming cooler months.
having driven the mo3 last year the mo3L IS FAR EASIER TO DRIVE :)
borrowed a spacer and presto :batman:

gotta have one of those mo3m`s  if only they allowed different body shells
the mo3 chassis class would be awesome

Mini Ride Height

What is a good starting (or finishing) point for the ride height for a M03?
How many spaces ('O' rings) do you use in the shocks?
As a mini novice I need all the help I can get.

DiscoStu 05-10-2006 05:44 PM

Go for just below arms level. Adjust the ride height with shorter springs (tamiyas short touring car tuned spring set) and ride height clips. It is important to get these things low but if you just pack the shocks with spacers you will take away all the droop and the car will unload the diff every time you enter a corner. Front-Blue springs/60wt oil. Rear-Red springs/40wt oil.
