When you're choosing a spool, take note of the weight of it. A heavier spool will create more understeer going into a corner compared to a lighter weight spool. The last time I tried a spool it was completely made from steel and I came off the track hating it, later I found out the weight of the spool was probably the culprit for the excess understeer. I'll try a lightweight one the next time I decide to test them.

Remember because a spool is a locked front diff essentially, it will cause some understeer on corner entry as the wheels fight each other. On corner exit they really help you get the power to the ground though.

Every time i have tried spools i have hated them also. The only exemption is i have been playing with a TA05 a bit lately, and with a spool in it it is very nice, probably not as quick as a well handling 1 way but much more consistent. I think with some more setup work and driver adjustment i could get very used to it.

It all comes down to setup, my car has no understeer.

I run a regular one-way with stock (I'm faster)... on my local track (small technical track)

When I run MOD, I run a spool on this track, with the very tight turns and big changes in speeds, a spool helps me get around the track a little better, and also keeps the car nice and stable mid-corner. with a one way I find myself driving an extremely taily car. Likely because I like to use a little drag brake, and with a one-way this causes the car to spin out off throttle, mid corner.

On a big open track, I'll run a one-way with mod/stock.

I've tried a 'locked one-way' (xray multidiff)... and dont see much advantage over a regular one-way.

My spool (xray multidiff) totally destroys the plastic 'blades' that save your outdrives/dogbones... A set of blades per race meet is not uncommon. The price you pay for working the front end REALLY hard. I've not once yet replaced the blades on the rear diff yet..

I wouldn't say a spool is a bodgy way to make a car handle, infact a poor spool setup can result in a really sh1tty handling car (understeer, front end chatter, etc)..

I've also 'saved' my car a few times with the help from a spool... (wall/pole, brakes... stop)..

I'd like to try a front diff for the carpet racing I do.. but generally use a one-way, stock motor.. yes a one-way on carpet, and it's pretty damn fast. I cant get a spool to perform with a stock motor...

I'd love to try an adjustable centre one-way (layshaft?)... that'd be trick.

I tried a spool for the first time last night and I now have a taste for them.

I ran it in my TA-05 with a center one-way and it was sooooooo much faster out of corners than with a one way in the front and it corrected my over steer issues. the car is heaps easier to drive on our track now.

now I must find one that will fit in the F-201........

To get the same feel out of your f201, use these...

They will turn your oneway into a centre oneway / front spool on your shaft drive...

I love the spool in my FTTC4 on the astroturf track we race on, it is absolutely ballistic off the start and out of corners :D

I've never had a problem with understeer, infact I had a HUGE problem with oversteer when I first put it in, my teammate had the same problem, I had to find so much more rear grip it wasn't funny!
I've never had a problem with durability, I've trained myself pretty well now to get off the throttle quick if it looks like I'm going to clip something.

I don't like it at our asphalt track though, made the car WAY to different from off power to on power, I'm much happier & faster with a diff.
