2021 Hills Offroad Vintage Festival 11-12 September
#1
********* Cancelled for 2021**************
Hello all Vintage RC car enthusiasts!! The Hills Off Road RC committee is proud to announce that it will be hosting the 2021 Vintage Festival on September 11 & 12, so mark it in the calendar, book flights/cars/leave/brownie points, lock yourself in the man cave/garage/workshop/dining room and get wrenching!!
After a years absence, we’re certainly excited to invite you to join us this year and I’m happy to say that the committee for 2021 is as supportive of vintage racing as our previous committees and this has been shown in the commitment to build the new track layout so it can be used by vintage as well as modern cars so this year we have a full track to use! I think the feedback we received after the 2021 enduro was this is the most vintage friendly track that Hills Off Road has ever had
Summary of changes for 2021, these are essentially the same as the changes for 2020
Theres a lot to read below, over the last year or so, I’ve had varying feedback so the below is a snapshot of the potential classes for 2021 and some tweaking on some of the current classes
Over the last little while, a number of people have approached me wondering when we will be able to include some more recent buggies in our event. This is something I am happy to look at but not at the detriment of the original vibe of the event, the core foundation being the great era of r/c racing from the mid to late 80s and early 90’s.
That being said, there have been vintage events in Sydney for over 13 years across different clubs etc and the goal posts for what may be considered old enough for vintage races hasn’t moved much so the potential to appeal to people who are a little newer to r/c racing is worthy of looking at and while 3d printing is helping keep the old buggies alive, there is concern out there that eventually people will deem the older cars too expensive/fragile to race
Prior to Covid, in 2020 they Ryde crew offered up their 3 round series for vintage and “less vintage” buggies and it’s been very fruitful discussing with Richard the potential areas where the Ryde series could align well with the Castle Hill events and I believe we’ve reached an excellent point where a significant amount of the buggies in the Ryde series could fit in the Castle Hill Festival without affecting the vibe of the event and maybe just needing a motor change to fit into the class. The other beauty of the time-frame we’re covering is there wasn’t a huge leap in performance across the period as manufacturers focussed on touring cars
Summary of suggestions
Classic 2wd cutoff shift
The plan is to separate the cutoff dates for classic for 2wd and 4wd, we’ll move the 2wd cutoff to 1997 which will allow the inclusion of the RC10 B3, and also tidies up the inclusion of all the XX variants. 4wd will remain unchanged at 1996. A reminder that any vintage buggy is eligible to run in the classic class if you have too many vintage buggies to choose from and the motor for this class will remain as the Tamiya Sport tuned
Outlaw 4wd expanded
We’ve been trialling the outlaw 4wd class and it’s attracted a bit of interest. Having raced during this era, once the XX4 set the standard, it took a long time for anything else to come out to rival it and indeed, Losi re-released the XX4 worlds after the XXX4 as people were still racing it late into the 2000’s against the B44s etc so for 4wd we’ll look at making the cutoff end of 2009 which will include the Losi XX4/XXX4, Schumacher Cat SX & Cat 3000, Yokomo MR4 variants, Kyosho ZX5 variants, Associated B44/B44.1, Tamiya 501x/511/DB01/DB01R, Hot Bodies D4 and Durango DEX410 (original release). The date cutoff is a guideline, where a buggy was released after the cutoff and it’s a slight tweak on the previous version, we’ll look at including it which is why the B44.1 is on the list as it was a very small tweak on the original B44 whereas the B44.2 was a big redesign with a longer chassis and big bore shocks making it easy to exclude, so on that topic, we’ll carry on the festival mantra of no big bore shocks in these classes also. Motor for this class will be the Johnson 540 motor available from the club, RC Hobbyland or Campbeltown Hobbies, part JOH683. As this is effectively a new class, from the outset, we’re proposing control tyres being the M3 Holeshots front and rear, links and part numbers are in the festival guidelines
Outlaw 2wd
We’re also looking at a Demo outlaw class for 2wd for rear motor buggies only with a cutoff roughly around 2010, this will encompass all variants of the Losi XXX and Kyosho RB5 as well as Associated B4 and B4.1, Schumacher Fireblade series and the Tamiya 201. A couple of nods to Ryde with regards to this class, we’ll keep the cars rear motor only (no custom or commercially available mid motor conversions) also we’ll keep it at original wheelbase so no “+8mm” chassis extensions etc We’ll also go with the concept of no bar tyres (which the Ryde series have gone for this year),but go one step further and make it a control tyre from the outset in line with the 540 class the Hills off road club has just announced which uses M3 holeshots on the rear and M3 ribs on the front, links to the tyres are below. Standard foam insert to be used. The motor for this class will be the Johnson 540 motor available from the club or from Northern beaches hobbies, part JOH683
Control tyre: Rear Proline M3 Holeshot #PR8206-02 -> https://www.campbelltownhobbies.com....3-soft-8206-02

Truck brushed motor option
Most people went for the 17.5 brushless option and Truck continues to be a well-supported class and there was some good racing so we’ll keep the brushless option at 17.5 blinky (Roar legal). We’ve had a look through the brushed options that are readily available and give a little more grunt so we’ll go for a 15T sealed can brushed motor this time, there are a couple that are available including the Core-rc one and Dynamite and the HPI firebolt, these all look like re-badges of the same motor and all have the internal fan which aids cooling. Links below, if you find another re-badged one that you want to run, just check in first so we can see if it’s the same motor

Purist tyres
Edit--After receiving some good feedback, no changes to the purist tyre regs for the next festival
Purist rere ultima
I’ve had a query with regards to being able to run the rere ultima in purist, the short answer is yes (the Associated RC10 classic rere is legal) the requirements are that you will need to change the rear tyres to one of the choices above or something less racey and you need to run the standard shocks and other standard parts that come with the car such as the gear diff. You may change simple things like screws, turnbuckles, oils, springs, pinions. I acknowledge that the rere gearbox is updated to 48 pitch from the original, we’ll keep an eye on the speed differences and maybe look at ways of slowing it down perhaps via dropping a pinion to bring it back to the field if need be. Don’t forget too that if you’ve hopped up your plastic fantastic car, the purist class is a great place to campaign your Fox with a Thorpe ball diff etc
Misfits
This year we’ll trial including the Avante and Vanquish in the misfits class. The rere is allowed, but the buggies must be very stock with standard shocks / chassis / suspension etc. You can change springs / oils / bearings / tyres & wheels. At the moment I’d include a “no modifications to the motor plate to allow bigger pinions” for the avante/vanquish just to see how they go, with the max 23 pinion they will be a little undergeared which might even the cars out quite well. The class already allows the Thundershot series of buggies and theres a Terra Scorcher rere that’s been released. I’ll also take feedback on potentially allowing certain 2wds into this class that may not fit into plastic fantastic but are entry level.
New Class Proposal
Stock / Junior truck- if there’s enough support for it, I was thinking about a stock truck class that was also skewed for juniors / enthusiasts, the other reason being that I’ve had some feedback that 17.5 truck is a little quick for some of the dudes. The idea is for a class for lower points trucks (based on the Enduro buggy list 2.5 and below) and evening them out with motors. So trucks below 2 points run sport tuned, trucks at 2 points run torque tuned and 2.5 point trucks run the Johnson 540. Juniors get to run 1 motor grade higher so a junior could run a Torque tuned in a Losi LXT and juniors are allowed to run 3 point trucks with a 540 Johnson motor. We can also allow 4wd trucks if there’s interest. The first thoughts are Trucks based on 4.5 point cars such as Lazer will run the Johnson 540 and lower point 4wds will run the torque tuned. I’m not sure what day this class would run on but at this stage I’ve nominated it on the Saturday as Stadium truck is on the Sunday, but I’m happy to move it if more people would prefer it on the Sunday. I’ve attached a pic of the trucks and their respective motors that can be run. We might also utilise the enduro driver points system where maybe Bronze and Silver/Bronze drivers can run the same options as the Juniors. I’ve included a list of which trucks go with which motors and which drivers
Vintage Race of Champions
Back in the day, the BORMAC club in conjunction with its round of the ROORDA tour would hold a Reedy race of champions type event for the top racers at the time. On the grapevine I’ve heard that there may be a contingent of racers that were around back in the day and are still racing at the top of our sport who are interested in competing at the festival. This is fantastic news, so depending on the numbers etc, I’ve envisaged a reedy race of champions style class for these guys with rotating grids etc so they can duke it out and demonstrate their skills while driving vintage machinery
Track direction
The Hills off road crew have been hard at work in recent times rebuilding the track with a fantastic new layout. Big shout out to Peter, Ben and the committee members for actively including the vintage side in the design side of things and inviting us to test out the layout and open to any feedback. The idea being that the track can serve both modern and vintage buggies and the guys have done a great job. The track has been built to work in an anti-clockwise direction and all cars run that way which is great if you’re heading down to do some pracca
Apologies for the long read, but thought it worth getting all this out there as soon as possible so everyone has a chance to have a look at it and a think. The main thing I want to get across is the aim of expanding the timeline of included buggies is to attract more people to the event rather than shift the focus from vintage, the hope being that it give people the opportunity to see the older buggies getting around and want to get involved themselves. All feedback is welcome, post here, or pm me.
As usual I’ve also attached the eligible buggy/truck lists. If there’s a buggy you have and you feel it should be on the list, please get in touch and if it’s eligible, we’ll add it.
We always mention that if you have multiple cars eligible for a class, please feel free to run them all during the day, if you have 6 x 2wd vintage cars setup, run a different one each race! And if you have too many vintage cars to run, put a sport tuned motor in one and run it in classic
Entry fees will be $20 for the 1st class, $15 for the second and $10 per additional class after that, you can enter up to 3 classes per day. If you bring your kids (16 and under), they're just $10 per class.
Handout 540s are available for $20 per motor. Please order your motors when you enter the event. You can also buy them direct from RC Hobbyland or Campbeltown Hobbies and quote JOH-683 as the part number
The BBQ will be running for lunch as per usual and cold drinks will be available all day and we’ll update you closer to the date if we’ll be able to run breakfast as well.
Drivers meeting 730am
******Racing will START at 8am SHARP on BOTH days******
The events to be held on Saturday are:
2wd Vintage Stock
2wd Open (Vintage or Classic)
2wd Classic – Sport tuned
2wd Purist Stock
2wd Outlaw
Plastic fantastic
Stock truck
The events to be held on Sunday are:
4wd Stock Vintage - 540
4wd Open (Vintage or Classic)
4wd Classic - Sport Tuned
4wd Misfits/Pipe Frame - 540
4wd Outlaw Class - 540 (Buggies up to 2009)
Stadium Truck
Hotshot
Depending on numbers of entries, as per previous festivals, we may end up combining some classes, but only if we have to and we’ll try to avoid merging classes were drivers are entered in both
We will be having approximately 4 minutes between each race – as there are lots of us running multiple classes
MVP - On Sunday afternoon we will present the trophy for MVP (Most Vintage Pride). This will be an entirely subjective award which will come down to biggest effort for the weekend so it will encompass thing such as (but not limited to) display vehicles/arrangement, attire, attitude, competing in the spirit of the event, tallest stories about the good old days, rarity of vehicles raced etc. Being No.1 on the track won't make you the MVP. Being No.1 in the pits will! Wiggy took it out in 2013, Stephen James in 2014, Pete Wagner in 2015, Dean (Captain Splatt) in 2016, Scotty Hogan in 2017, Rob Smith in 2018, Andy Ives in 2019,who will pick up the prize in 2021?
We’ll also have trophies for concourse as well as our “coolest car raced” awards on each day
The festival has been growing with each year. We love seeing the variety of cars being raced and put on display. If you’ve never entered a festival before, give it a go!! There’s a friendly atmosphere and everyone is happy for others to check out their cars and have a chat and it isn’t a race for sheep stations on the track with plenty of fun classes in the mix allowing you to run the beginner based models such as the Frog or Hotshot against similar style cars. If you have any questions, please feel free to post here or send me a pm, we’re only too happy to help and offer advice/assistance.
I genuinely appreciate feedback/thoughts from you, if you have any ideas of a cool class, we can always do like we did last year and run a demo class to see how it’s received and go from there
Cheers and we look forward to seeing you all there!!

Just a quick tip, if you're looking at the brushed option for truck, Metro hobbies have the core RC 15t sealed can motor available at a good price

Just a quick clarification regarding the tyres for purist, i've had a query in relation to other 2 inch tyre options, i think given this is the first time we've had of a 2 inch tyre, the simplest way is to make the T650 schumacher tyre listed in the guidelines the only 2 inch tyre that can be run in purist

Hi Everyone,
Well its unfortunate news today, but the aim is to give everyone as much notice as possible, I've discussed with the committee and we agree there is no choice but to cancel the Vintage Festival this year. I have appreciated everyone's enthusiasm for the event, people looking forward to it as something to attend after lockdowns end, however, same as last year, many of our vintage enthusiasts come from regional NSW and interstate and even from overseas so we're mindful that even after strict lockdown laws are removed, it will be difficult for people out of sydney to come to the event etc and there is no telling when this will get much better at this stage.
So the hope is that we skip the 2021 festival and we look forward to the 2022 edition of the Vintage enduro which should be in its usual slot in March/April next year.
Until then, keep those builds going and post them here for everyone to enjoy
Cheers

Cheers
