Default Venom on board temp/failsafe instead of temp gun?

I need a temp gun, but was thinking about just getting the venom onboard temp/heat failsafe. If it works great, it seems like it would just be one less thing to have to worry about having in my gearbag.

Are these any good, and would you recommend using them in place of a regular hand-held temp gun?

Also, IF I do get this, and I'm running it on my V-spec, what should I set the temp failsafe at? 260 degrees?

Don't use it, NEVER use it to prevent overheating, that is what your tune is for. Just spend the $ on a decent temp gun, you'll get more power (probably) and you won't be destroying your engine with a bad tune.

I didn't really plan on tuning it to temperature. I was just planning on using the temp gun to make sure I am in the ballpark temp-wise. I was curious if this would accomplish that same thing.

I've seen revews where they compare the temp the Venom gives to a decent temp gun, and it was more than 10 degrees off, which is pretty bad. Get a decent temp gun, keep the temps reasonable, and just tune to sound/power/smoke.

Funny you mention that...I just read read reviews where it DOES say that, but they ALSO claim it probably has to do with where the probe is placed on the cooling head.

very true! when you temp with the venom usually get's it's reading from a sensor wrapped around the base of the cooling head inbetween the fin's and when you temp with a gun you are temping from the glo plug
