No need for sprecial servos or recievers just a reciever pack and your all set.
Lipos are 3.7v per cell so 4.8 is impossible with Lipos.
The reason why something needs to be done is based on the fact that sub-c cells will be less and less popular as most classes will be running Lipos. This means fresh cells will be harder to get so 12th scalers will have a tough time finding cells. Add to this the ease of running Lipos and the extended cycle life.

It's analogous to why can't they make a NiCD or NiMH cell with a nominal voltage of 1.5V to match alkalines...
The one thing that A123 makes that is intriguing is the "Hypersonic Turbo" module that is basically a voltage regulator that boosts the output to few select voltages, at the expense of runtime. They were claiming 5-10% loss:

As far as pricing goes I'm not sure as our supplier didn't give us the price of this cell. I'm pretty sure it will not be cheap as it's high capacity and C rate. We could lower the C rate but I'm afraid it would impact the cycle life and possibly the performance. As we already know our Lipos have great cycle life that could justify the price not being on the cheap side. I will ask our supplier about pricing and post it once he responds.

Getting LiPo accepted for mixed racing in similar voltage situations was a lot of work. It'll be interesting to see how things go over with 1/12.
1/12 is sort of the bastion of simplicity in R/C racing. LiPo will eventually make it even more so, but the transition to get there could be tough if it divides the class.

I just got the pricing from our supplier and this pack will retail for 95.00 which means a street price of 65-70 bucks. He also mentioned that the capacity may go up to 6000 when they produce the packs as the current cells they made are handmade.

As a consumer, I demand 12th scale lipo. After reading many related threads, I honestly do not care why it cannot happen. It is not my job to figure out the solution, it is the manufacturers. My job is to fork over cash for products I want, and I want this product. Danny/SMC, thanks for listening to us consumers!
