i've tried smc 5000 (28c), orion 4800 and orion 3600. if your car can fit the smc 5000 go with that one. plus heat them up and you will feel the difference.

i'm running orion carbon 3200's. compared to my old, but still pumping out good #'s, IB3600's these packs are a huge improvement as far as power and run time are concerned. when on track with drivers of similar (lack of) skill running similar motors but "better" lipos, i have yet to see a difference.

i have no idea what the total run time is with a 13.5 or a 10.5. i practice for no more than 6 minutes and have yet to feel a drop off.

The two I keep hearing about are the Core 5000 and the Orion 3200-3600's
I run the Core's (it's difficult to get to the connections on the Orion when mounted in an mi3)

I'm going to make up an adapter so Spencer can try my packs to compare, at present I can't see a difference between our cars other than corner speed etc (setup)

While lipos take one hour to charge (the usual flat rate), you can bring two or three to the track as opposed to six NiMH packs and you'll end up running the entire race day with no sags in sight. One pack in the car, a second on standby and a third on the charger.

So you're charging a NimH at a higher amp rate than a lipo... no wonder it charges quicker...

a 1C charge will end at roughly the one hour mark.

The difference with a Lipo is that once it hits 8.4v (90% charged) the charger will reduce the amperage to keep that voltage at 8.4 whereas with a NiMh charge it'll keep going and cut off when the batteries peak.

You can charge a LiPo pretty fast with some of the newer high end balance chargers. I've been charging at 10 amps with my FMA balance charger and it's working out fine. Takes about 40 minutes to charge a 4800 or 5000 LiPo (Orion or SMC). A good LiPo on a balance charger won't even get warm to the touch charging at 10 amps. Be careful with those charge through balancers (some only balance at a quarter amp between cells and that may not be enough with an older pack).

My Orion 4800 is over a year old and it still works great. Been charging hard since day one without any problems.

My point was that w/ lipos and the recommended charge rate (5400 = 5.4A), they just take longer than NIMH. You can't crank up the amperage like with NIMH to charge faster if needed. Of course a pack will charge faster at a higher amperage, thus the reason I used 8A w/ NIMH.

I also noticed that the lipo packs start off the same way as you posted they finished. With a low amperage at first, then ramping up to 5.4A, and then back down as the pack "peaks". I use a balancer (Checkpoint) each time I charge.

10A, really? I was under the impression that you cant go above 1C per pack, because the Lipos just can't handle it. What type of charger are you using for this?

It's a fact that charging above 1C will adversely affect the number of usable cycles that a battery can provide. It doesn't seem to matter much, since we get so many cycles, most people are happy to replace their packs by the time they finally wear out.

I wouldn't charge above 1C unless you have a good reason for it. I've managed to race with LiPos for 3 years now, never using more than two packs, and 1C charging has been fine, both for racing and practice.
