Had a guy here in NZ running one at our last meeting which just some Yeah Racing Lipos the cheap ones off RC mart with a 13.5 Brushless(27t) and was getting alot faster laptimes than with 4300mah batts,Also run time he got 30mins out of it and the batt showed no sign of knocking off in power at all....this is the way RC cars are going,Lipos and brushless no questions about it

I call BS on the 2 above posts. Ive done speed tests against the Yeah racing lipos vs the Trakpower 4900 in identical vehicles and the Trakpower was quite a bit faster.

Your friend didnt get 50 min on a trakpower 4900 with a 10.5 unless he was going incredibly slow. The max is about 19 minutes and that is not geared the fastest.

+1

not home is our new resident experts on all things RC, and he weighs in on all sorts of things and makes a whole lot of very ridiculous, odd, and bizarre claims. But this is a regular occurance this time of year on all discussion boards as kids get out of school for summer.

Then again, all sorts of people have been making those stupid claims since LiPOs first came on the market but they're always as a result of being slowpokes that finish many laps down from the leaders or just the uninformed that can't rationalize that amp hours are amp hours regardless of which it's a nimh or a lithium battery.

The two that I've run are the Trinity Li-pro 4500 and the Checkpoint 5400. The trinity out of the two was a much weaker pack. The car felt very sluggish as if I was under geared. With the Checkpoint pack my car was a rocket. So far what I've run so far, the checkpoint is the best.

+1 on the Checkpoint 5400's. Plenty of rip and runtime. My only complaint is lipos take forever to charge compared to NIMH.

Larger capacity batteries take longer to charge than lower capacity batts - but since 5400 nimhs haven't been approved nor are they available I would venture to guess you wouldn't have any experience with them to make such a comparison.

No offense, but if you're comparing the charge rate of this year's 5400 lipo to last year's 4200 nimh you're looking at 1200mAh worth of difference - so of course it takes longer (but that wouldn't matter what sort of pack it was).

I dont think it has to do w/ the capacity, it's how lipos take a charge. The packs only get the 5.4A for a short period of time during the charge, where NIMH get the full 8A until peak. Still 10 times better than any NIMH pack I have ever owned.

Even a 5400 NIMH would still charge in less time than a lipo. 100mah takes about 1 minute at 6A, even less at 8A. So a 4600 pack takes about 35-40 minutes at 8A, so a 5400 would take about 50min, still 20-25 minutes less than a lipo of the same capacity. Again, it's how the lipos take the charge with fluctuating amperage that takes the time, not the capcity IMO.

I'm a newcomer to the hobby, a little over 6 months and all I've ever run are lipos. I think they are easier for beginners as far as run time and maintenance is concerned. I have 2 CoreRC 5000s and an Orion 4800. The Orion lasts a little longer, not sure why, maybe the 16C rating vs Core's 22C.

The last visit to the track I ran 455 practice laps in a Schumacher Mi3 with a 17.5 brushless. I swapped lipos maybe half a dozen times. The CoreRCs last about 20 minutes. I doubt anyone could last 50 minutes on 1 lipo, especially with a 10.5. Not unless the turn marshalls were real slow.

Maybe they are distracted by the live nude jumping-jacks performed at the gate?

Usually with my 13.5 I am using 1200-1500, Johnson motor around 1000-1200.
If they are getting 50min they probably are running slow...

I have been using the Orion 3200 and Peak 4800 with no problems.

Well, except for the energy lost to heat with a nimh that you don't get much of with a lipo. Our fly friends who are a few years ahead of us are adamant that a lipo of the same rating will run longer. And those guys seem really obsessed with run time for some reason....

I agree that 50 minutes for a 10.5 onroad seems a bit much. We get over 30 minutes with a 17.5 2wd offroad from a TrakPower 4900.
