Man, have thins really gotten this way? I'm still using 1800 MAh nicds, and I will probably never go to NimH, Nimh is great for my cellphone and my cameras and my mouse(oh that' lion :P) anyway, I run for 15 minutes or so on my crappy nicds, and I have 5 of them, so I'm running for more than an hour.

Or has it come to the competition being so much that people would spend $70 dollars on batteries for 5 more minutes of runtime, I guess I'm just nuts, fooling with cycling, and cutoffs, to hell with that, I like my 15 minute quick chargers, fast and good for me. Guess my time is just gone, or the lack of ever having a real race track has prevented me from going nuts on this hobby .

Even Gp's can be sold with a dead cell, besides there arent any matched ones out yet that I know of, and first run of GP4300's were so bad they got discontinued. Back to the Topic though, Dasupacat1, any luck getting through to there "customer service"

What way, getting a bad cell is just hard luck, it can happen to anyone, maybe battery packs should have a Born On date like Budwiser . As for the cost of batts do you remember how much the Sanyo 2400's (I think thats the right mah) use to cost when they first came out?

No. I'm not gonna bother. I never got a reply from them the last time soo.. why should this time be any different. I just don't have the time to wait. I assembled the pack and gave it a charge at 4amps for 10 min. Then let it sit for awhile. 30a discharge it on my ctxdv2 to .9v. Let it sit again then fully charged it then discharged it at 30amps again. I calculated the cell had about 3100mah

Well another bad story tonight.. went club racing and another of the racers was 2 packs short because his 6 week old IB4200's are dead. One pack vented on charge and leaked on his work bench the other pack had a cell die. These were both matched by a big name matcher (who shall remain namless because i don't blame matchers for whats going on here) IB's are now widley frowned upon at my club and people are discussing alternatives.

I think the point is being missed. Dasupacat1 has said in both cases that these were brand new packs. Several people have replied with the 'proper' way to charge, discharge, cycle or store these cells, but none of that applies to this situation. The cells were dead when he purchased them. There was no charging, discharging or cycling involved before he discovered the dead cells, except by the factory or the matcher. A few others have basically said that's the way these 4200's are, just accept it. I would expect that rate of failure if I could buy the pack for $10. It just seems backward to me to be expected to accept a certain amount of failure when paying top dollar.

See I'm trying to get back into on-road racing and batteries from what I'm told are the most important part of on-road performance. I cannot see spending that type of cash on something that won't last as long. LiPo and Brushless are the way to go I guess.

Dasupacat!: Call Trinity. I have NEVER had a customer service problem with Trinity. I had a Dynapulse fail, Trinity replaced it promptly and at no charge. Call them rather than e-mail. It really blows that they haven't responded as of yet, but I'm sure if you call, they'll make it right.

Now, as for alternatives: The EP cells are looking very strong both in performance and in durability. Seems like most matchers are moving to the EP Cell now, and things should be looking up.

Well that sucks, but who knows if you can blame the cell or the opereator, yea it could have been the cells, but it also could have been the guy using them, without proper maintinance and cycling, all high capacity cells can and will fail.

S.Heath your right getting a dead cell upon perchase has nothing to do with you battery cycling, it has to do with how long the batteries have sat, which I why I suggest the battery matchers start putting the Born On Date on the outside of the box

H8racing, Orion is also going to have or already has EP's, lipo and brushless are fine, if they are allowed at your club

I don't think we can be suprised by cells blowing up or dying in this sport. We abuse the crap out of cells and expect them to live. I know the matchers say, "charge at X amperage" and "discharge at Y amps", but this is rarely what the cells were designed to do. Cells that this hobby used to consider "fast" charge like the following

http://sanyo.wslogic.com/pdf/pdfs/N-1300SCR.pdf

were not meant to be charged at 5A or even 4A. The data sheet says 2A!!! I know we are beyond this cell, but the idea holds true. Cells are not meant to be charged at 12A. We all pretty much know this, but this is racing after all. We always run eveything on the edge of what it can handle. Batteries are a huge limiting factor for electric racing. They are much heavier than a tank of gas (which hold about 10x the energy), and they take up a ton of space. Being so we try to get every last ounce of power out of them that we can. As EA said, when a manufacturer changes the cell structure to make them more reliable at the expense of a couple percent voltage, the hobby turns on that company. Personally, I loved the 1400 SCR cells. More durable than anything available today and lasted a lot longer too (total life span)! My friend still has some and they work rather well.... they are 15 years old!! they sit for months at a time without charge and work just fine when he goes to use them. I forget to charge my IB3800's for about 2 weeks and I have problems. What a bunch of crud!!!

Hi guys,

I am using since march 8 EP-packs from ProMatch and didn't have any problems. They are used every week including various races each month. No problem at all and plenty power and runtime. I abuse them for stock even with 7 Amps and drive them completly flat with modified. These cells are just as strong as the GP3300, no IB's for me anymore. The next step will be the GP4600's, there are some racers here who have very good experiences with them. Sadly the're out of stock everywhere.....

greetings,

Eric
