ACetone... and you can use it over and over again.. buy a gallon cut tire off rim, put rims in acetone over night, (10-12hrs) and the left over tire pul rite off, wipe rim, and good as new.. Then put acetone back into jug.. I use it for 1/8 and 1/10 tires.. always have

Thats why i dont bake and use acetone, it doesnt softern the wheel so you cant bend/warp it acidentally..

What if the rim is a painted rim (i.e. an SC10 rim) How does boiling/acetone affect that?

Another reason to do this isnt only to save rims, ive had plenty of foams go bad in wheels and the tires and rims were still good. I use Acetone, buy a gallon of Acetone, gallon paint can, put your wheels in and leave them alone for a day or so. Open can and tires and rims are ready for some new foams.

Since the wife doesn't want me stinking up the house with the smell of rubber in the oven, I use the BBQ, and it works like a charm.

1) Turn the BBQ and get it up to 500 degrees.
2) Set the tires put four beer cans (or similar) on the BBQ grill.
3) Set tires on beer can (rubber horizontal)
4) Close lid, leave "cooking" for 6 minutes.
5) Turn off the gas, and let the BBQ cool with the tires inside.
6) When it's cool just peel the rubber back.

In case of use of acetone...
does it have to cover fully the wheels in the paint can, or just a small amount can get the job done?

Although I have never tried this method, I have read that if you put some acetone in a sealable container with something in the container to set the wheels on and seal it up that the fumes will actually do the work over night.
