Finally got a chance to drive the 417 tonight. It's late and I'm tired, so here's quick/dirty report.
With my 416X, my fastest lap on our current layout was a 11.39. I did that twice, and both times seemed a little bit like a fluke. It was more typical to have laps in the 11.7 range, with 11.5 being pretty great.
With the 417, I was able to beat that lap on the 5th pack with an 11.31. In earlier packs, however, I did several more 11.39's, and lots of 11.4's. On average, my laps hovered in the 11.5 to 11.6 range.
Some of this is subjective, since the track felt a little different tonight. Honestly, it felt worse, but sometimes our best laps come when the track seems a little sketchy. My early impression is that the car is easier to go consistently fast with.
I put my 416X setup on there, and the only change was that my inner camber links were 1mm lower since the bulkheads are apparently higher on the 417. The car felt quite similar to my 416X, and definitely drives like a Tamiya, if you know what I mean. I found that it was more stable in long, sweeping turns, and I felt like I could push it a little harder and carry more speed in those sections. It also initiates very quickly, so much so that it took some getting used to. It seems to transition a little faster in tight sections as well. The only thing I didn't like was that the car felt like it wanted to keep turning at the end of a turn rather than straighten out. It was easy to drive around that, but it's something I'll probably try to address with setup, though I don't know where to start for that.
This was on a 98'x42' carpet track running "boosted" 17.5. I had my 416X setup with a 5.5, and I was slower than my 417, but that's not surprising. I'm not much of a mod driver, and the current layout has a lot of short sections in the infield.

Thanks for the reply Chris. I remember seeing your car on the course and was very impressed by you and your car's handling. Yeah the motor mount looks like a great upgrade too, but I wish they would have made it like the 416x; where the mount wholes was on the bottom center, too, instead just the west and east wing where the west is hard to get to because of the spur.

all you need to do is drill two 3mm holes and you are all set. They work great.

Otherwise, new diff keeps out the dirt better, steering uses less spacers (in answer to the other Q on ackerman spacers. 3mm on the 7 = 5mm on the 6 I believe, will check tonight), Centre pulleys are solid metal, and everything else is standard tamiya..
Was speaking to a friend yesterday who made the commet that this car seems to slot together better than the 6 did, and I have to say I agree with him on this point... the build was very easy, no fiddling with the fit of parts etc.
@ Syndrome - measured the bulkhead caps, the camber link positions are only 0.5mm higher on the 7... so 4.5mm on the 7 = 5mm on the 6
