Awesomatix EP Touring Car (A700 Shaft Drive)

thanks for the response... so 2 years later and still the same issues are happening in a brand new kit (EVO), but yet it was never addressed by modifying the parts so they work well out of the box? ...They have come out with a couple new versions of the car since then? that is strange to me, but I guess it is what it is...

If you overfill the diff it will push the outdrives outwards and that will cause it to lock up. This happens even with the metal Awesomatix gears. Either remove some oil or wait a run or two for it to seep out and then the problem will go away.

ok, that makes some sense... I will definitely say that the "fill line" is ambiguous, so that definitely could be the issue on my end! again, i am used the xray instructions where it gives you a weight the diff should weigh pre-oil and post-oil... so i could always get the exact amount of oil in the diff! thanks again for the advice... im going to eventually get there with the car

I like to weigh my diffs too. When I built the diff I put it on the scales to check how much oil I put in. I found the following to be good (weights are of the big half only):
Empty weight: 6.91g
Full weight: 7.63g
Weight of oil: 0.72g
It's not a large mass so accurate scales help.

awesome, thats perfect! i have a hudy scale so that should be accurate enough to match your weights!

(Likely) The "big" gear(s) in the diff are shot. I think your toothpaste polish method + not enough shims caused this.
Gd2 doesn't have the issue when built with the noted xray parts. Unknown about vbc internals.

So I have two of the GD1s built exactly to the manual specifications. If I hold them with gear side down and when I turn the out-drive, the other side doesn't move. However if i push the out-drive into the diff, it moves fine (although slightly notchy). Both of my diffs are exactly the same... and i have built and rebuilt them 3 times. Granted, I know I am new to this car, but the only think i can think is there needs to be some shims added somewhere, but it isn't noted anywhere in the manual that it needs to be done. I saw a few posts on Petit that talked about grinding down a small part .15mm and adding .1 shims in there, but it really baffles me that would be necessary given how precise everything else is on this car?
Anyone else experience this with the Diff? is that why they came out with a GD2?
Thanks,
Justin
