You need to slightly modify the end pieces that hold the battery in place. The inside reinforcing ribs of the "L" pieces need to be shaved.

Actually, elongating the holes in the battery holders is a lot easier and certainly less messy than Dremel dust all over you. Also that retains the rigidity of the end pieces

when you put the ball diff into the transmission, which way do you put it in? Do you put it in so the diff screw is on the left or right side, looking on top of the mini with the front pointing north?

Use Tamiya AW grease on the balls, diff plates & thrust bearing, then (optional) put loctite threadlock on the step screw and tighten it until it stops (until you cannot tighten it anymore).

Install the diff so that the nylon gear part of the diff is in the right hand side of the chassis. (Screw is therefore on the left)

Tiptoe

I always put my diff in the car so that the rotation of the diff will tighten it. This seems to help keep the diff from spinning loose which is a commen issue with these cars.

One ways don't work in a mini. For one you have no brakes, two you cant sit the car still on a slight incline (it just rolls)
There's no benefit to doing it really.

I dont have a scale, but seems like my mini weighs a ton. it is a lot heavier than my TC. Thats just by picking them both up.

My guess is that running a spool in the front would serve a similar purpose but still keeps the brakes
