You know sitting here building the Photon rear gear diff, the gears in it look increadably simular to my Mugen MTX5, in fact I'm fairly sure I could use the Mugen silicone oring on the outdrives...

Some useful information:

Mount positions in comparison with the two Photon´s.


Photon "M" mount (low insert position) = Photon EX "H" mount (without shims)
Photon "M" mount (high insert position) = Photon EX "H" mount (+ 0.5mm shim)
Photon "H" mount (low insert position) = Photon EX "H" mount (+ 1.0mm shim)
Photos "H" mount (high insert position) = Photon EX "H" mount (+ 1.5mm shim)

Just weighed my EX.

1430 grams race ready (rubber tyres).
Well above our max race weight 1380 grams

I have all alloy options installed and yeah racing twin fan.
Using regular weight LTC-R protoform body.

Anyone else 'over weight'?

IMO Running anything but a Lightweight body is an awful decision.

LW bodies are worth .1-.2 per lap plus 30 or so grams.

Either way my car is 1389 with 50 grams of weight on it but I have small electronics.

My electrolics are also quite small, Tekin RS Pro, low profile KO servo, mini Ko receiver, MRT transponder.

I have a heat sink with twin fans and 5800 mah lipo, could these be adding the weight.

My old Photon - with Exotek chassis- was 1380 with all the same gear / body as above .... except for alloy steering knuckles, c-hubs and centre pulley.

This information is acquired to the Top Racing Japan.

I think they have the thickness of the chassi in account, the standard chassi plate.

Ok, I reached the point of the bulk of car done, following the manual so up to doing the shocks...

Some things worth noting, screws not as horrible as my original kit, but still not great, new rear diff is a little strange, the oring means it's hard to 'feel' when the case is done up tight, you have to torque the case down what feels like very tight to stop the screw holes leaking, and the outdrive orings do seem to leak regardless what you do, maybe cause of the missing shims?

The real weird is when I reached building the shocks, I can't believe they still come with about .2-.3mm play from the piston on the shafts, it's seems so odd to not include some shims, old issue, no fix within a brand new kit/model?

Mixed general feel about the kit quality overall, it reminds me so much of the original kit, much of the quality is outstanding (including quality of material), but you hit a few problem areas that seem a strange let down among that.

Oh and the steering hubs have very little play, no shimming seems required there anymore (but new rack has a fair bit of play in it), I got a slightly wonky spur pulley that won't run true in my kit, and a camber link rod that is threaded the reverse to how it's marked!, but overall it's got some nice features and touched on the new kit.

Likely I'll order a few little bits to cleanly finish the build, or borrow some bits off the old car.

What are the optional shocks?!
What motor were you using?

Run the EX as per manual for the first time on Sunday. Although I thought it was too stiff surprisingly it was ok. Problem that I hadn't run this layout before and I had trouble finding proper lines...

I ended up with this setup

Very happy with the kit and it's durability as I did some airborne stands

Next outing will be in few weeks, on another track though, as we have this week national off road race!

- 3 hole 1mm optional pistons
- Kyosho Grooved o-ring found here
