I ended up using a total of 0.9mm on each front axle .. then the bearing | wheel | bearing.

1mm gave a little binding. I used the Tamiya 5mm shims.

Also, I am going with TRG Rubber...

A ball diff is going to be better than a geared diff - smoother - but will require more maintenance as the plates wear.
For rallying with low traction tuning the diff to have a little slip...

Apart form that, there are mre moving parts, so more possible problems.
