Xray XB4 2017. Tekin 13.5 Spec R. 78/23 Covered Turf Track

Dont be scared to turn the timing down.. yes.. i said it.. down.. here is what i have done testing wise, with my motor analyzer.

Xray XB8 2017
Out of the box, 45* timing, 5.0A draw, 41xx KV, hight 31xxx RPM 8.2V battery
run 1, 78/23 Temps 160+ motor faded at around 5:20 on the last lap.
Run 2, 78/22, Temps 160+ fast car, but lacked the top speed. no real fade.. but temps were too high
Run 3, 78/25, didnt like it.. car was too slow exiting corners, got about 4 laps, pinion came off.
Put in old motor for mains.

testing the next day, on analyzer and track
Analyzer with charged battery pulling 8.2V
50* timing (suggested by another Spec R user), 6.1A draw, 42xx KV, low 32xxx RPM. (not much of an increase from box)
43* timing, 4.9A draw, 41xx KV, mid 31xxx RPM. (similar to box setup)
39* timing, 4.1A draw, 41xx KV, low 31xxx RPM. (numbers still the same)
32* timing, 2.9A draw, 4089 KV, 30,800 RPM. (took this to the track)

78/23 setup, testing with Xray teammate running Team Scream. Same top speed, good pull out of the corner, great punch, ran over 10 mins, no fade. temped in the 140 range.

I was suprised how much i could lower the timing, and still get the similar numbers RPM, KV wise. compared to a Fantom motor, at 45* timing, only pulling 27-28k RPMs.

Give it a try.. you will be suprised..
Interesting. Got my sky rc analyzer yesterday, checked 13.5 spec-r
Cant tell exact timing, tested between 30 to 50 on the can.
results:
kv-4600 rpm-37500, draw 5.2a
kv-5000 rpm -40200, draw 7.4a
kv- 4472, rmp - 36220, draw 4.0a
kv - 4200, rpm 34000, draw 2.8a

also, tekin spec-r on this analyzer showed very good phases on timing, withing 1-2deg on every timing I tried (45 46 46 for ex.)

I decided to set it for 4.0a, going to check it out at the track in few days.

Unless it is a spec class where everyone has to run the same turn motor, stick to the regular Gen3.

The 6.5 SpecR was specifically made for 1/12 scale 1S mod classes that require a 6.5 motor. It is not the best choice for other classes really, but does work if you gear it down a lot in light cars.

We need to make that more clear in the motor description on sites that list it. We are also updating our website to make it more clear.

I have a gen3 21.5 that I have as a spare if I don't sell it what would be a good gearing for usgt for a baseline. Right now I have a motivational in the car geared 100/47 in a t4 2018 any ideas on the tekin. Also it's not a spec r it's a regular gen 3 rpm

I'd start in the 3.8-3.9 range

How about timing right now it's at 50 only because I'm used to running them at that timing from Trinitys liking it and start from there. But I see that people are saying go low on timing with these motors

I use a Trinity motolyzer to set timing; the others are ok too. better than nothing. 42-46 would be my start. There are some who have gone lower than that and you might look at that too. I never set timing by amp draw. I look at KV and RPM to AMP draw. Im not sure how some guys are able to get 5-8 amps on a checker and set timing. so be wary of doing that. Always after timing and gearing changes check motor temp after a couple minute run. I like to keep the temp in the mid 140s with a fan and all should be good.

Any suggestions on setting up GEN3 motors for a SCT oval based late model? Total weight race ready is 90.5oz. I am looking to order a 13.5 and a 6.5 this week so i can run two different classes. Currently have RSX speed controller. We are allowed to run boost in any of the classes. I know in the past with the 13.5 setup i am currently running, it is favored to run a weaker rotor if you run boost by some but others still swear by the highest torque rotor you can find. Based on you folks experience, How would you start out on the settings with the Tekin motors? We are coming from running MOTIV MC2's. Thanks

If you can use boost, stick to the regular 13.5 Gen3 motor (not the Spec-R version) and pick up a blue 12.5 torque rotor. If the class ever goes blinky, the Spec-R version will be faster. For the 6.5 in such a heavy vehicle, the included 13mm rotor is what you want.

Start the 13.5 (not Spec-R) around 35-45 degrees of timing with 20-30 degrees of boost from 8000 to 25000 rpm. Increase boost and lower the pinion gear if you need more power.

For the 6.5, start at 30-40 degrees on the can and 10 or 15 degrees of boost from 10k to 35k rpm for smooth power. Shorten the RPM range for a punchier feel, but watch temps.

Just ordered the Spec R 13.5 motor, I am going to use a gen2 rs spec for a month or 2, then upgrade to the rs pro be. I was torn between trying the new Reds vx2 13.5 and their brand new esc, but I already have a hotwire and Reds doesn't make sct motors.. I have a Tekin Pro4HD 4300kv and t8 1900k and love them both, so pretty excited to try this out! It will be the first motor in my new Tekno eb410, waiting for it to be shipped is torture! haha [:

17.5 Spec R motor - These things look like they rip at my track. Don't know if people are putting in a hi torque rotor. What rotor does this motor come with and is it the highest torque Tekin rotor? Anyone know approximate Gauss? thx all want to get one
