Tamiya has been around forever but they have always been just a little behind when it comes to offroad race vehicles. They produce adequate off road vehicles but just not quite the level of others ie Mugen, losi, AE, kyosho. I'm not knocking Tamiya my 1st hobby grade RC was a Tamiya. I have owned several electric Tamiya cars but none of them were what I would consider race vehicles. It is what it is and 90% is the driver anyway.

One thing that is different from brand to brand is rubber compounds. IMO, it's nice to have similar tread patterns but many different compounds which allows more tuning without a wholesale change to the tread pattern. It's already tough enough to decide what tires to bring to a race when you have so many options on tires, foams, compounds etc. Not to mention it can get very pricey for the guy who pays full buck for all of their stuff.
