I'm posting this info again for individuals (IL/WI/MI racers) that may be traveling though Indianapolis on their way to the Southern Nats. Traffic on I-465 on the southwest side of Indianapolis has been extremely heavy during the evening rush (4pm-7pm EST). Expect bumper-to-bumper traffic that may add 45-60 minutes to your travel time (longer if there are any traffic incidents).
----------
FYI: Road Construction Advisory - I-65/I-70 through Downtown Indy
Anyone traveling through Indianapolis on I-65 or I-70 from Sept 3, 2013 through at least Nov 1, 2013 should use I-465 around the city instead of using I-65/I-70 to go through the city/downtown. Part of I-65/I-70 through downtown Indianapolis will be CLOSED for at least the next 60 days (to lower the road surface under several bridges).
Here is a link on Indiana State's website for more info: (http://www.in.gov/indot/3154.htm)

How about this... For us northern/Wisconsin and Illinois people at least.
Take Hwy 65 towards Indy.
Then exit at hwy 267, exit number 133.
Take hwy 267 south to hwy 144.
144 turns into hwy 44.
You now have a choice, stay on hwy 44 back to 65 or south on hwy 31 to 65. The computer models shows it is faster for the hwy 31 route. Choose your poison. It looks like this detour would add about 30 min, but it would/should avoid grid lock. Can any of the Indy locals review this and give feedback if is this a good idea?
Snowy.

I looked at that Barry. Takes about and extra 1/2 hour that way if all things are equal, but if traffic is going to be a headache in Indy its a good alternate. Anybody know if the speed limit is up to 65 on hwy 57? I remember doing 70 no problem when I was going to school in Champaign but....
If the traffic's not bad the bypasses only add a few minutes to the trip so that's what I would like to do.

I'm not sure about the morning, but traffic has been heavy during typical evening "rush hour" traffic on I-465 on the south side of Indy. During off peak hours, there haven't been any significant delays.
In other words, no need to detour if you travel through Indy before/after rush hour.
Also Indy is on Eastern time or is 1 hour ahead of Chicago, so make sure to factor that into any alternative travel plans.

For anyone thinking about heading down I-57 to I-24 there is construction in Mt. Vernon that can have 1-2 hour delays plus from exit 59 through exit 53. They are using photo speed enforcement through these construction areas. Speeds change from 65 to 55 and some areas 45. Then once your on I-24 you need to watch your speed closely. I live in Southern Illinois and travel I-24 a lot, and I usually run 65-68 mph until I cross over into Kentucky.
