Default track layout

IMHO - It doesn't matter what the track layout is, it's the same for everyone.

The bad part is there are still dots for me to hit.

Based on these lap times (very fast btw) Im calculating the # of laps itll probably take to make the A main. For oval (based on 4 min races and last year's qualifying):

4 cell stock: 51 laps for TQ , 50 probably makes the A
4 cell sportsman 19T: 55 laps for TQ, 53 probably makes the A
4 cell expert 19T: 60 laps for TQ , 59 probably makes the A
4 cell pro mod: 64 laps for TQ, 63 probably makes the A
6 cell factory mod: 67 laps for TQ, 66 probably makes the A
12th pro mod: 62 laps for TQ, 61 probably makes the A
12th 19T: 57 laps for TQ, 56 probably makes the A
6 cell touring 19T: 54 laps for TQ, 53 probably makes the A

These are just rough estimates on my part. For all I know it may take more or less for TQ and to make the A

Default quote

ok fellas.....here is the quote of the week so far for the snowbirds:

we're staying in a room across from the pool and courtyard and manufacturer's row.

about 4:30 this morning i get up and walk out side and you can hear the guy announcing the oval practice times over the speakers they setup in the courtyard.....
this guy walks out of his room(obviously he is not a racer and is not here for the race) he walks up to me and says:

"why the f--k his he using a microphone"? "Ill take care of this s---t" you had to be there for this to be funny....he stormed over to the track....and apparently it worked cause we couldnt hear the speakers anymore after that lol

6 cell mod: not enough cars practicing to get a good idea (should have some estimates later)
12th pro mod: Not enough practicing
12 19T: no practice results posted

Based on the classes I do have estimates for...your gonna have to put up some big numbers to place high at this race
Actually the times are only a 5 lap average, probably at the beginning of the run so you have to account for drop off in battery over the whole run.

The times are really close to last year's up front times and here are last year TQ'd

19T open - 58
4 cell Mod about 63
6 cell mod about 66

Default Daytona

I understand they changed the Daytona road course this year because it used too much of the oval.
They added to the Daytona layout to make it safer for some racing types - especially motorcycles. They have already updated the road course to optionally exclude Nascar turns 1 and 2 but did not make it a mandatory & permanent change. The Rolex 24 hour race has already run and they did not use the new layout- they used the old layout which includes 98% of the oval, the back chicane and the regular infield. Bike next month will run the new layout. I believe the main reason Daytona added the optional layout was for bikes, the speeds and horsepower are over 200 (mph & hp) now on big bikes and the tires don't always last. The banking causes extreme heat and premature wear on the tire carcass. There have been many documented bike tire failures at Daytona over the last several years and it's only a matter of time before more racers are killed. Daytona stepped up to make a change, the tire co's are working harder and now the Daytona 200 is run on 600's instead of the Superbikes (lame).

Default Daytona West Horseshoe

Me in the West Horseshoe during bike week last year ('04). Funny thing is now bikes will be going the other direction in the West Horseshoe - could make for some fun, interesting Photoshop work...

Anyway! - back to the 'birds action. I wish I was there sort of. I've been twice and then dropped out of the hobby (again) for a while so the wife and I could start our family with our first child. I've been getting the itch to get into it again and will probably get up to the birds at some point this week to check out the action. Good luck to all who go and have a great time. The track is the same for everyone and I think it will be more fun for the less experienced drivers this year. Keep in mind this is not an invitational-only event where you have to be a big name sponsored driver to compete. Keeping it fun for the newer crowd will keep them coming back. The big names are there too and you can count on them always being there.

Default Practice times

The practice times are based on 5 laps that can be anywhere in the run. I take the fastest five laps that are within 3.4 and 6.0 and average them.
