assuming you are running 17.5 non-boosted... u need FDR around 4.0... 80t/4 x 1.9 = 38t... you'll need a 38t pinion....

Makes the motor mount screws vertical instead of horizontal. A stock motor necessity unless you like unbalancing your spur gear by drilling wonky holes in them.
in Asia.... mod is a bigger class than stock... i don't think 21.5 even exist in Hong Kong or China....

FDR is the Final Drive Ratio. FDR = Spur/pinion x internal ratio. sakura internal ratio is 1.90.

from my experience, i run 3.5 to 4.0 for 17.5 . check the motor temp after each run... i try to keep it between 160-170F ...

as for the pinion, what's the cloest one to 38t you have in your pit box? 38t might be too big. Build the car first and see how much room u have. I think you might need a smaller spur.

so are you running a 43pinion?
or did you choose a different spur?

Just so you guys don't have to do the math, with the various diff and layshaft pulleys available, you can get a bunch of different internal ratios with this car. I would guess some of the larger layshaft pulleys won't work because of the belt lengths, but that's a guess.

I have not tried them all, so I don't know if these belts will handle all of them, but here are the internal ratios for all of the pulleys:
  • 40T/19T: 2.105:1 GEAR
  • 39T/19T: 2.052:1 GEAR
  • 38T/19T: 2.000:1
  • 40T/20T: 2.000:1 GEAR
  • 39T/20T: 1.950:1 GEAR
  • 37T/19T: 1.947:1
  • 40T/21T: 1.905:1 GEAR
  • 38T/20T: 1.900:1 (stock)
  • 39T/21T: 1.857:1 GEAR
  • 37T/20T: 1.850:1
  • 40T/22T: 1.818:1 GEAR
  • 38T/21T: 1.810:1
  • 39T/22T: 1.772:1 GEAR
  • 37T/21T: 1.762:1
  • 28T/22T: 1.727:1
  • 27T/22T: 1.681:1
Some of those larger layshaft pulleys with a 38T diff pulley would be great for VTA or other spec-type classes to keep those pizza tin pinion gears off the car, but I don't see it happening anytime soon with those stock belt lengths.

I made a simple FDR calculator sheet in Excel similar to the one we used for VTA racing for all of the Sakura internal ratios and pulley options. input your spur and pinion combo and it will calculate the FDR for you. No frills, but it will find an optimal FDR if you are looking for a specific ratio.

*GEAR marks ratios only available with the new 39T or 40T gear diff pulleys. Not available for ball or roller diffs.

I plan on just running in large parking lots with the stock car to start off with.

I'm planning to use a Tacon motor from hobbypartz since its a low cost motor. What KV rating should I use on this car for my use? Also what FDR should I shoot for? I will also be buying a range of pinion gears and spur gears for future use.

Thank you for the Excel spread sheet squarehead. It will come in handy.

3 racing have released 40T pulleys for the gear diff as well, add that into the equation as well

LOL, one more setup that the stock belts won't fit.

I updated the above internal ratio list, as well as the XLS file on my server. Keep in mind, the new 39T and 40T diff pulleys are only available for the planetary or gear diffs, and not ball or roller diffs.

@Over Gear
What batteries do they currentley run in mod?
It used to be 4cell (nimh) for TC which was unheard of in the rest of the world.

Do they run lipo or life f.e.?

Just curious.

I know 23t also used to be huge. But I really do not know what the switch Li-batt and BL did to the Asian rc racing world....
