I love my 104 (contemporary scale looks) but some of it's handling deficiencies are hard to overcome (lack of steering) compared to the shorter wheelbase 103. I'll deal with that for now and wait for the next TCS race. Mugler opens up a can that I'm interested in with the intro of the 25.5 brushless spec Novak. I can not wait to tinker with the boost and turbo features of my Tekin and I was wondering how you guys feel about it in the F1 class?

Here are some pics for you. I am just running an old LRP Quantum. I have a 13T Hobbywing system coming soon so I'll see if that will fit. As far as brushless goes, I think a Tekin would fit nicely.

Personally I prefer the scale looks of the F104 and my car seems to perform well when I take it to the track. It's actually a lot of fun to drive.

I think some of the direction for F1 class will come from Japan as they are currently the most active in producing new F1 gear. This is due to the F1RCGP series they have been running this year. The rules were based on 200mm width and wide rear tyres (controlled Zen tyres) because everything on the market used this size. Obviously they couldn't change the rules mid-series when the F104 and F10 came out (except to include the narrower Zen tyres for the F104).

It will be interesting to see if they alter the rules for next year. But this may upset the manufacturers and racers if they need to make changes to their relatively new chassis. I hope they do change the rules, for reasons already mentioned by others. Or at the very least, they could announce the rule changes but introduce them in 2011 so manufactures and racers have time to prepare. Who knows, next year's TCS may be restricted to F104's only as well.

There are no rules for this class, outside of Tamiya racing. Roar has rules that are frankly, outdated (width-213mm, stick packs only, etc.).

The problem, as it was just mentioned, is that the f103, and all of the cars using those dimensions as a base(Tech, 3racing, TRG, Cross, et al.) are going to be illegal if you want to move on, as it was suggested. There is also the problem of 90% of the fields that i see locally being 103 type cars. This class has just taken off again, and you're asking to get rid of the cars? Instantly dead class.

You're better off putting a 103 front end on your car and running 103 tires if you are not competitive.

Honestly, I am noticing that a properly working 104 is not that far off, and can be easier to drive. Easier to drive=banging out the same lap over and over

Default Servo Recommendations???

Just got my F104 yesterday. Arrived on my Birthday, Lucky Me!

I have no idea how much servo I need for the F1 class??? I don't want to spend a ton of money, but I'd like to have an adequate servo for this chassis.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

That's what i heard in the local scene. F104 only and Formula Tuned Motor for TCS or TAC (that's what they called it here) 2010

When the F103 15y came out it was just a special edition like the the 1/10 Porsche 934. It has all the right bling bits (carbon, aluminium, ...) for good performance but no real category. With the F103 lot of people still have one, dusted it off and went racing. The small manufactures all quickly followed becouse they saw an oppotunity for a new (reborn) category.

I mean look at the body's for a 200mm car. Today Tamiya allmost has none for the F103, Chevron and others all make body that kinda look to the real thing but really arn't.

The F104 although not a replica body (can't wait for the Ferrari) looks better then all off them.

I do think foam tyres is the way to go but rules shoold mention a minimum diam. And of course 180mm wide.

A conversion kit for the F103 and other knock off's to bring them to 180mm would be a good idea.

Well, I raced my F104 and beat some guys with F103s so that means the 104 is faster than the 103.

You beat me to the punch.

Sometimes I love you guys and your broad conclusions based on one or two data points. Some dude on the Internet has X experience under some unknown set of conditions and variables and suddenly it's fact.

And you're surprised that a car that has had 15 years of development is more dialed than a completely new design?

just because i just joined rc tech doeasnt mean i dont have any experience. i have been racing and driving rc cars since 1993. i see some of the videos on youtube where a 104 does beat a 103, but it depends on the track. the track i ran on is a tight technical track. one can clearly see the 103 is faster in a button hook turn than a 104. you dont need a timer to see it. a fast sweeping track im sure will level the field. at my track lots of people have both anv 103s and 104s and so do i. we all have tested both cars so far, and on this track the 103 gets it.

i also agree to move on and keep up with the times, but i think it will be hard for some because the new car in MY opinion is not better than the old. if the new 104 came out and blew away the competition we wouldnt be having this conversation. then again were the real 08 f1s faster than the current 09s ?

Honestly, out of the box, the 104 will never beat a 103. The rear t bar design is bizzarre. The distance between the rear pivot point on the chassis and the pod is like .5mm, so it's super stiff front to back. That is a huge sticking point. The fact that it's 20mm narrower than the 103 is also detrimental to corner speed. It is longer, which can be an asset.

There are several 104 cars at my track, but I see them have problems with settling the rear end of the car down. There are also plenty of guys who have 103rm cars who just wheel around the track with no problem with the basic car. I don't think it's so much dialing the car in as inherent characteristics out of the box.

When you starting changing things, though, it can get a lot closer.

Default Set up ?????'s

I am new to pan cars and having a problem finding tuning tips on the F104. I raced this weekend and I was totally lost on what adjustments to use to correct the problems I was having, Example - end of straight into sweeper I experienced a serious push among other things. I was hoping someone could give me the basics regarding the effect on some of the adjustments available.

1) Shock adjustment - tighter vs looser
2) Damper - tighter vs looser
3) Front Springs - Silver vs Gold vs Black
4) Rear Ride Height - Lower vs Higher
5) Camber - 1 towards rear vs 2 towards rear
6) T Bar - Stock vs Soft Option
7) T bar - Pivot joint loose vs tight
8) Shock Oil - heavier vs lighter weight

I actually was able to fit a de-cased Castle controller in mine (mounted on its side).... no pics... but I didn't mount it because of how much weight I would have to add to the receiver side to balance the car out...

but that was to run the silver can and still keep my sponsor happy... and since Castle doesn't make a 17.5 motor yet I chose against it and put a Novak XRS in temporarily... it fits, works with the silver can, and it allows me to add weight where and when I want if I need to because it inherently balances with my Spectrum 3500 Rx....

Ultimate F1 race a couple days ago had pros drivin 103s and 104s.

The 103s won but the 104s were on their arses. That's with only 4 months to figure out the 104.

Not much difference in lap times between em.

I think the finish order would have been close to the same no matter which car each driver used. I think the top drivers, except for 1, all wheeled the F103.
Can't forget to mention Joel "Magic" Johnson drove a Kyosho right into the hunt at the front of the pack! Ya, dude's got game!

Proof that the 104 has much potential.
