The One True 13.5 Thread
#556
I've been thinking about email this guy to see if he'll share some secrets on what he's doing to his "built" brushless motors. It sounds like he opens them up, maybe rewinds them, creates better solder joints, polishes rotors, etc. I think I'd be interested in learning to "tune" these things, but I'm not sure where to start. I guess I could find one that's burned up, tear it apart, and get my head around how things work. I'm still curious to see if Novak's Sentry can be leveraged to make a crude dyno.

I am about to find out. I bought a Novak 13.5 ss Pro and have a 13mm coming. I'll compare that to my LRP sintered 13.5 and run which works best. One thing I see initially, the LRP has more torque out of the corners and a better feel then the sintered ss pro. The ss pro has a bit more top end with less heat. About a wash with the tip going to LRP with feel. The 13mm is suppose to give similar brushed feel-- less heat-- more gear to the Novak...we'll see.

I found the LRP 13.5/sintered and the Novak 13.5/13mm-sintered to be very, very similar. The LRP was maybe just a tad smoother.
When comparing the 13mm rotor in the Novak, I've heard guys say it's slower, and guys say it's faster. My experience is that it's about the same, it just makes the motor a little more forgiving when you're gearing it, and has a better drag brake feel, which is what I preferred. You have to gear it quite a bit higher, though, so make sure you've got the pinions & spurs to make that happen.

With the standard rotor and NiMH, I found myself around 40-41mm rollout. With the 13mm, it was closer to 45-46mm. That's just ballpark, but it sounds like other people are in a similar range. You're probably smoother on the throttle than I am, so you might be able to pull more gear. If you're using LiPo, go up a few teeth to account for the voltage difference.

Yea, the gearing is insane. I was getting close to 50mm with LiPo. I usually keep pinions from 35 - 60 on me. It's nuts. I had to pick up an 88 for the 416, though, 'cause the big pinions were hitting the top deck. :-(

McGreevy where were you able to get your hands on an lrp. They have been out of stock everywhere.
