just get a rectangular piece of plastic(like you get off toy boxes), and trace your chassis onto it with a whiteboard marker. then cut it and two way tape it to the bottom of your chassis(or use the existing chassis screws to hold it in place).
i did this with my cen ct5-s, and its bottomed out heaps of times, and hasnt worn through the plastic. and no stones get into the driveline.

The problem with your idea is if you dont cut out all the openings to match your chassis is you WILL over heat your electronics

use this, stick it to the chassis.. trim it to match the shape of chassis

then cut out the screw holes. i only cut out the screw holes i actually use..

There is a seller on here selling chassis protector film for pretty cheap. I think I got 5 large sheets for $10 shipped. It's just like clear bra film you get at the autoparts store, but much cheaper. Cut a sheet about the size of the chassis and stick it on (after cleaning the chassis of course). Then trace around all the edges with an x-acto blade. Takes about a half hour and works perfect...

It's best to cut out screw holes, but not 100% necessary. If it's covering the screws, simply poke your hex drive through and loosen the screws. The film won't peel up if you loosen each screw a little at a time.

Try this stuff from Rommel, he has sheets for several chassis. All of the screw holes and openings are already cut out for you. I have used them on two of my cars and it holds up really well.

I have tried the losi and associated chassis stuff and it's o.k. but this stuff from rommelsworld is the best. It doesn't screw with your droop setting.s

I've given up on chassis protector it will just cost you some money. That just how asphalt racing go. I've tried different type of chassis protector they wear out so quick and at $20 a pop might out as well just save your money for a new chassis. You have to replace it in a long run anyways. Just a thought!!!

i have air intakes on my electronics, which capture air from the top of the car.
on my electric i just used race tape on some areas, and left the motor side uncovered to get more air to the electronics.
but on the nitro i covered it all up, to stop stones destroying the belts. works pretty well.
