You can go to 11.1v 3s if you have the velineon. If it's an xl-5 you can use a 2s but a 3s is too much
Edit:just saw the brushed part. You can go with a 2s 7.4v lipo but 11.1v is too much for the xl5 esc

It comes with a 8.4v nimh battery is the Lipo more powerful that it's not rated for as many volts

Is this your first time using lipos? Fully charged 2s lipo is 8.4v. Lipos will hold more consistent power (than nimh) through out the run till the lipo cutoff shuts off power to the motor (do not have it out in the middle of the street before lipo cutoff hits). Make sure lipo cutoff is set on the esc before using a lipo. Also you need to monitor the temps of the motor or you will be burning them up. Longer run times more heat. If you want more speed you will have to use a bigger pinion. But again you have to monitor motor temps. 3s (11.1v) lipos are best used with brushless setups.

For speed:
Easy/cheap speed you can go with a motor replacement. The 12Turn it comes with is weak. Has been sense 1994. This 17 turn from AE will go right in and the added low end power will make the truck more fun. https://www.amainhobbies.com/reedy-r...sc9626/p142482
Normally, the less turns the faster but, keep an eye on heat, both in the motor and the speed control.
Or, your truck is Brushless ready. If you want to spend the money for it. There are so many different ones out there that I will only tell you that the Traxxas one is what the truck was built for and that Castle is one of the more trusted and versatile.

Getting speed out of batteries has to do with there "C" number. More the better. Run time is the mAh number. More the better. Take a look at this Traxxas page to see what XL-5 you have, What it can do and, what batteries from Traxxas fit. They offer kits to extend the size of the battery box if needed as well.

No, I don't work for Traxxas. I just have a thing for them. I do hope this helps get you and your son up to speed.
