Cub86 posted the question: Hi. I'm struggling to understand the lay down situation. I run on high bite damp smooth clay and think the conversation would help on my surface but from what I'm reading I need to buy the lay down kit tlr338004. And the dirt gear case tlr332063. But do I really need both from what I've read the dirt case is 1-2mm higher anyway and u don't use the +3mm hubs or the front pivot hrc or Hrc mod. So is the dirt lay down kit tlr332063 is all that's needed to get me a lay down set up that's suited for clay With the components and car I already have. And if I only get the dirt case is there any problems that will need to be addressed IE.. bone plunge . I do know I'll need 1mm spacers on the waterfall to clear the battery. Thanks guys really trying to get my head around this.

Franks response:
Laydown Conversion will work great by itself. You run the aluminum +3mm hubs, the diff is +3.5mm, and you run the HRC front setup. Just follow a setup sheet from tlracing.com (Frank Root).

Dirt Tranny has the diff at the same height as the standard tranny case, and works with the standard plastic hubs. Both are +/- 0mm from stock. When you run this, no need to run the HRC front mod either.

I've found the stock laydown conversion parts to work great for most tracks. The dirt tranny is a great tuning option, but definitely not 'required'.

Something I made, pretty basic. Just to give people an idea.

Kit front spring is 3.18 which is a lot softer than kyo gold, which is farther away in range than the whole range from softest to stiffest in the LF set (which is very narrow). The non LF blue spring is 3.8 so TLR does offer a usable equivalent.

Mayfield brought the Kyo golds around with the 2.0. I believe Travis Amezcua ran the XXX with a really stiff (blue?) front spring too and that was even an RM car.

The kit front spring seems counter intuitive, like we should be running stiffer front springs for a mid-motor car but it's working well for me, even running the inside hole on the arm so I'm not really looking to change. I do plan to try the middle arm-hold and lower oil weight this evening.

KYO Gold is approx 3.30lb. Look at the next column on the chart. Noone would run it on 2wd if it was anywhere near 3.87 (way too stiff for dirt). Most common used buggy front springs for med/high grip dirt tracks range from 3.0 - 3.45lb.

Yeah, I guess it could be better. But what difference does it make other than aesthetics? Everything is safe and secure in there, there's just too much is all.

Mayfield's setup is gold rear and white fronts. Their "measured" rating is only ever so slightly stiffer than the stiffest LF TLR springs.

I stand corrected. I was going off TLR's figures for the springs, as not seen the measured ratings.
My main point was that no one seems to be using Kyosho gold fronts on set up sheets, just rears, but people seemed to be hung up on gold fronts for some reason.

Actually 3 of the setups call for KYOSHO GOLD fronts:

Jake Thayer - OCRC
JR Mitch - FZRC
Eric Willardson - Murf's IRCR

Others mainly used Silver LF fronts.

So I have had the car for a few week now and I have one problem with it.I can seem to get the on power push out of it.its not to bad indoors but for some reason outdoors it pretty bad.I have tried different setups on still the same end result, pushes.yes I have changed slingshot oils, shim placements, moving battery.could it be the fact im running the thin shorty packs. Or should I just get that brass weight for the front.

I believe you'll have to go to the 2.0 spur and pads to get a 70.
