Been using this one since last Xmas and before that, the one I had didn't have a clutch so I was doing the same thing, tightening the last bit by hand. But this clutch is good and consistent, so I don't do that any longer, I just set the clutch and let the driver set them all the way.

There are several good choices. I've had the little Ryobi for a few years, as do plenty of buds, works fine.

The clutch can easily go lower than needed for any screw I have seen or would use it for to begin with. I usually use #3 to 4, on typical 1/10 scale stuff.

The speed is slow enough to be controllable, but it would be cool to have variable speed I think, about the only shortcoming I can think of. But I could also see variable speed being more of a hassle than worth, don't know.

For me any unit with a nickel based battery is unacceptable, no matter how good the charger or the unit itself is.

I use the power screwdriver by Channel Lock. I got it at Costco for $15. It's 4v Lithium Ion with a clutch and a light. It also has a battery "checker" on the drill, push the button and l.e.d. lights light up to show you where your battery status. Also it transforms from a regular drill profile to a straight drill...totally worth $15!!

I will agree that for the $$ it is very good.. But, i got tired of going to use it only to have dead batts (NiCd).. So, today I picked up this LiIon driver. Obviously I haven't used it yet, but looks like it should be robust enough to assemble R/C's.. Also, the one I got has a bult in torque limiter/clutch, unlike the one I linked.. I wanted the Hitachi one posted by someone else, but Lowes no longer carries them..

Believe it or not, and most won't, but the Integy TiN coated drivers are awesome, and for the $25 they cannot be beat.. I've assembled one kit, and maintained 2 kits for almost 9 months, and the 3.0mm shows very little wear, and it is the most used tip. the coating is the key..
