Castel only mentions a123s and lipo. I don't think NiMH have teh current to run a MMM combo.

The Mamba 5700 seems to be the choice for Slash on the Traxxas forum as well. I run a Novak GTB 8.5 Brushless with a 7 cell on another truck and have really good results. You won't see the performance of Lipo, but from my experience, it will definitely work.
Keep in mind that ROAR just released Provisional Slash rules and if you want to race, it has to be 17.5 brushless or 27 turn brushed. Hope that helps.

Since you are converting a Slayer and not a Slash I would stay away from the 5700 and the VXL. Go with something larger like the MMM 2200 or a MMM with a Medusa or Neu motor. THe 5700 and VXL are designed for 1/10th cars and the Slayer being based on a monster truck is a bit much load for 1/10th systems. Being a 4wd drive instead of a 2wd will put a bit more load on the motor.

I anticipate running the MMM/2200kV combo with NiMH would probably end up killing the batteries. I remember how hot my NiMH packs got with the draw of an Orion Revolution 13T in my BK-2. They'd probably friggin blow up with the amps the MMM sucks up.

I've been running the brushless e ervo with nimhs for the past month with no problems whatso ever. I run orions 4500 7 cell. The batteries do get warm but nothing close of popping. If you use quality nihms you will be fine. The only correction I had made on the MMM is set the punch control to 80%. I get around 35min of run time with this setup.

I will highly suggest you stay away from venom packs, they are not quality cells. Stick with Orion, SMC, SPC promatch cells are you will good to go. Pay a couple bucks more for the good cells that will put out when you need them too.

I'd recommend something other than the Elite's for a Monster Max.
They may have the C rating for it... But they lack the punch for running.
In my E-Jato with a 13.5 turn BL motor, they had the same acceleration/speed as my 3600 NiMh packs... Just more run time.
My MaxAmps batteries have WAY more punch and, a fair bit more top speed, as well...
Go SMC, or another big name brand, and you'll be much happier
