We have 3 Rustlers, and another roller. One of them is an RCM RC'd Rustler that is raced regularly. Here's a couple pics from a couple months ago. The big things that have changed since is he now uses a Spektrum DX3R, so that huge & ugly Traxxas RX is now gone, the RPM bumper has been replaced with the stock bumper.....MUCH better for racing, and we now use an AE battery cup for the front of the lipo.

My soon-to-be 13yo son is the driver. He's a much better on road then off road driver, but he still does well. He's usually 3~5 place out of 8~10 trucks. Not bad, especially considering he's the only Traxxas RC in the ST class. All the rest are AE & Losi.

Nice rustler!

What pinion should I be using? I'm using a Titan 23T motor, XL-5 esc, 87T spur, and a 3000 nimh pack. Thanks. BTW, I know about onroad more than offroad, so that's why I may ask odd q's.

Default Rustler and vxl

I have a original rustler and also a rustler VXL. THe original rustler has a novak SS 5800 ESC and a Novak EX 8.5 motor. Any ideas on good gearing setup? And the VXL has a Novak GTB and SS5800 motor and looking for gearing suggestions on this one too. These are just yard bashers so looking for a good mix of runtime and speed! Any help would be appreciated!

The best mod I have done so far to my VXL is put Jato GTR shocks on it. It handles 100x better now.

I love my Rusty. It is heavily modified with a Mamba Max 5700, FLM tranny case, STRC shock towers and bell cranks, Jato drive shafts, aluminum bearing carriers, high torque digital servo, HPI aluminum shocks, Bonzai Bar, wide front end mod, and other odds and ends

I got the newest Rustler XL-5 with the VXL style body. Hopups so far;
Front Aluminum caster blocks (in 3 days!!!!!)
Soon;
Spektrum receiver
brushless system (either Novak, Castle, or Traxxas)
Steel tranny

Broke the stock caster blocks while carpet racing.

I just bullet-proofed my steering with a STRC Aluminum Bellcrank Set and a Futaba S9452 servo. I can't wait for the weather to break and get my Rusty back on the road.

Another hop-up I just did. I installed an o-ring on the shock shaft by the spring clip to protect the shock from popping its cap. I got it from kavvika's site;

Default rustler

Well i can say that i love my rustler i have been thru alot of trucks t4's xxt and i keep coming back for more and now currently race my rustler at a indoor offroad track ill list the hop ups and why

first thing i did was the all steel transmission this was just the best thing i did never broke again
bought traxxas aluminum upper links for just the fact of the adjustibility of the whole setup
the steering rods suck so i used some lundsford tie rods from a xxt did the job great
next i saw a problem with the front shock tower flexing too much so i bought a traxxas carbon fiber front shock tower works great and looks great too
went with all the rpm parts i could find rear shock tower front a rear arms and then bought nitro 4tec rear caster for the back for the 1.5 degree toe in made the truck track so much better and rpm is soon to come out with a rear motor guard that i am going to get as soon as i can hehe
ahh this was a big one i kept bending the front pin that held the knuckle in the chub doggs down your steering i converted the front end of the truck to accept the nitro rustler front end which was much stronger you do have to get new wheels for the front but i have yet to break it
traxxas aluminum steering set one night i finally made the a main and i got 4 laps in and the screw in the stock set stripped out on me had to fix it
and last but not least was a veliineon brushless system just cause the truck was ready for it lol

well here is a picture
