I figure it this way.. Someone offers you part of a big R&D deal as a racer you are not going to turn it down..

Besides, remember when there was a racer named Cliff Lett. He did the same thing. These guys grow up and get bigger jobs within the industry, for the really good ones it's the natural progression from racer to designer. And new names and talents come in to replace them all the time.
