SoCal R/C Scale Series Presented by Tuning Haus !
Welcome to a new "scale series" of racing for Southern California. Built on his experience with local racing series and his Midwest experience with F1 and USVTA, Bill Jeric, owner of title sponsor Tuning Haus products has created a new series for Formula 1 and GT scale sedan racing cars. Full details and rules are being worked up but here is the calender and basic rules for the series. All races will be run at TQ RC Raceway in Chino and a special page for the series with points, race reviews and photos will be maintained on the TQ website. http://www.tqrcracing.com/scss/ Thank you Sean for your support.
All races will be run on Saturdays. Both F1 and GT scale sedan classes will have 3 minute qualifiers with your average 5 best laps seeding you for your race heats. Both classes will run three rounds per day. F1 will be 15 minute races with 2 pit stops. GT-10 will be 10 minute races with 1 pit stop.
Round 1: December 13th
Round 2: December 27th
Round 3: January 10th
Round 4: January 24th
Round 5: February 14th
Round 6: March 7th
Points will be 1 point for TQ and each race scores points so maximum points each race day is 301 points. For each race, 1st = 100, 2nd = 99, etc. Your best four race days will be counted for season ending points.
A new twist to the points is there will be an Expert and a Sportsman class. All racers will race together (not separate race groups). you will earn the points you score in the overall group. Points will be listed by the overall and also a separate Sportsman points total. What this means is if you are a Sportsman, finish 10th overall and are the highest Sportsman, you will be listed 10th overall in the main points total but also first in the Sportsman totals. If the second Sportsman finishes 15th overall, they would be 15th overall, 2nd in Sportsman but the points difference will be the gap between 10th and 15th, not just 3 points. Now Sportsman have a chance to "race for the win" at the end of the series. You will declare if you are an Expert or Sportsman at the beginning of the series. However, no need to worry about "sand baggers". If you declare yourself a Sportsman and at the end of the series, 3 of your 4 best points totals are top 8 (A main group) finishes, you just lost your Sportsman classification.
End of season trophies - Top 10 overall PLUS top 3 in Sportsman.
Rules: Will be listed later in more detail. For Formula 1, will be very similar to current rules most series run. One change will be an increased weight limit from 1050 to 1075 grams. Some of the newer chassis and F1 bodies are lighter so this helps make more achievable for all chassis / body combos. GT scale sedan rules will be exactly the same as the TQ RC series GT-10 rules.
Tech: Yes, there will be tech to help keep the integrity of the series. Weight, maximum width (190mm), voltage and "blinky mode" will be checked prior to each race. Maximum voltage will be set at 8.40. That does not mean 8.409, it means 8.4000 (same as what Reedy Race used successfully). If your battery is over, you have to go back to your pit. No "burning off at tech". The meter used by tech is the final word, no exceptions. You can come up early to check your battery. We hope to have a good turnout for both classes and with length of the races, we cannot hold up the start of a race for someone trying to run down their battery to make legal voltage.

Items to be teched: Weight, width, battery voltage, esc blinky mode. If battery is over voltage, you must go back to your pit area to discharge. You cannot discharge in the tech area. Only motors and esc’s on the approved ROAR list are allowed.
GT Sedan:
• Weight: 1375 gram minimum
• Width: 190mm maximum
• Tires: Open
• Wheels: Must be spoke type. Spoke decals on dish wheels is not legal.
• Body: Any 190mm scale / realistic body is allowed. No TC or pure racing bodies. Must have realistic looking race paint scheme. Must have all of the following on the body: front grill, headlight and tail lights (decal, painted or LED lights) Please, no flames or tribal paint. Body must be cut to the body lines. Must use wing from original body set. Use of Tamiya Lexan®hop-up wing sets allowed. Wing must be painted.
• Voltage: 8.400 maximum! That means 8.401 is not legal. (Reading of meter at tech is considered “final”)
• Motor: 17.5 brushless
• ESC: No timing, no boost.
• Battery: 2S LiPo
Formula 1:
• Must be F1 based chassis, no converted pan cars.
• Weight: 1075 gram minimum
• Width: 190mm maximum
• Tires: F104 size rubber type only. (No F103 size or foam tires)
• Wheels: F1 spoke style only. No dish wheels or wheel dots.
• Body: Year 2000 or newer body styles only (no F103 bodies). Lexan® body and wing parts must be painted. Driver helmet must be used. Realistic paint schemes recommended. Please, no flame or tribal paint schemes.
o Front wings: molded plastic style only. No Lexan front wings allowed.
o Rear Wings: Any 1-piece or multi piece rear wing allowed. If multi piece, can replace side plates with aftermarket side plates or make your own. Maximum dimension is 51mm wide x 73mm tall (same as Tamiya Ferrari F60 rear wing plates).
• Voltage: 8.400 maximum! That means 8.401 is not legal. (Reading of meter at tech is considered “final”)
• Motor: 21.5 brushless
• ESC: No timing, no boost.
• Battery: 2S LiPo
Qualifying, race and pit stops:
• Qualifying: For both classes, one three minute qualifying heat. The average of your five fastest laps will seed you for your race heats. You will run in the same race heat all day.
• Race length: Both classes will run three races each race day
o Formula 1: 15 minute races
o GT Sedan: 10 minute races
• Pit Stops: A pit area location will be determined based on the track layout. There will be a “pit marshal” in this spot. You will pull into the designated pit area and the marshal will start a timer and a red light on the pit box will go on in addition to a tone to let you and your competitors know someone is pitting. When the designated time is completed, the red light will go off, a tone will sound and the marshal will release you back into the race. The timer will be set to be shorter than an average race lap. This creates strategy you can use if you are caught behind a group that you feel is slowing you down so you can pit, come out in front of the group and then lay down your fast laps. NOTE: There will be only one car allowed to pit at a time! If you go into the pits when another car has already pitted, you can either wait until the other cars pit time has finished and then the clock will start for your pit or you can pull out of the pits, resume racing and pit at another time.
o Formula 1: Two pit stops. Must complete one full race lap before making first pit stop. Second stop must be completed before the 10 minute mark. No exceptions. If you do not complete both pit stops, you will be docked one lap penalty for each pit missed. Final 5 minutes of the race is run “heads up” as all cars will have completed their stops so drivers know who they are battling for position.
o GT Sedan: One pit stop. Must complete one full race lap before making your pit stop. Pit stop must be completed before the 7 minute mark. No exceptions. If you do not complete your pit stop, you will be penalized one lap. Final 3 minutes of the race is run “heads up” as all cars will have completed their stops so drivers know who they are battling for position.
Points:
• Point system:
o TQ: One bonus point for TQ for the race day.
o Races: Each race (total three each day) are scored separately using the “Qual points” system. This means you receive points based on your overall position in each race for the entire group. Example: if there are 30 Formula 1 cars, you have a bad qualifier and start in the D group but in race one, you finish first in the D group but your laps / time is the 5th best overall, you gain points for 5th place, not first in the D group. For race 2, you start with a clean sheet and where your laps / time compares to the other racers in race 2, that is where you score points. Your daily points total will be the total of your finishes in all three races that day. Points for each race round will be 1st = 100, 2nd = 99, 3rd = 98 down to the final racer. Maximum points for one day is 301 points.
o Season points: There are six race days in the series. Your four best race days will count for your season total points so you have up to two race days as “throw outs”. All drivers will be scored in the overall points series for each race class (Formula 1 and GT Sedan). Top 10 in Formula 1 and GT Sedan will receive trophies at the end of the series.
o Sportsman class: A special Sportsman class has been developed to allow the Sportsman and Novice level drivers to have their own title race within the series. You will designate yourself as Expert or Sportsman at your first race. All points will be scored for all drivers under the main list (Expert and Sportsman combined). However, a second running points total will be maintainer for the Sportsman designated drivers. If after race day 1, you finished with 280 points but where the highest finishing Sportsman, you would be in first in Sportsman class. If the second highest finishing Sportsman finished the day with 270 total points, they are second but are 10 points behind in the Sportsman points series. Top three in Formula 1 and GT Sedan Sportsman will receive trophies at the end of the series.
o “No Sandbaggers”: This series is intended to bring competitive racing, lots of track time and FUN all together. So, to prevent any questions over who is an expert and who is a Sportsman, this unique rule created by the So Cal RC Scale Series lets your driving do the talking. The “A main” in each class each race day will be the top 8 fastest drivers. At the end of the race day, the drivers finishing in the top 8 overall positions will be considered the “A group”. The final point total takes your four best race days points. If three of your four best finishes were 8th place or better for that day, congratulations, you just lost your Sportsman designation. That is why the point system is set-up the way it is. If a drivers on track performance bumps them out of the Sportsman group, there is no change to the others drivers points earned. It is also possible for a driver to finish in the final points series in the top 10 overall AND in the top 3 for Sportsman class and would win trophies for both.

I am so looking forward to this series... very cool... I will be at every race ( except Dec 27th , out of town visiting the parents )

Oh yeah, sounds like a blast. And Saturdays makes less hectic when trying to deal with work on Mondays. See you guys on the 13th.

The new series is coming up fast racers. Get your F1 and GT sedans ready and tuned for lots of racing action. Three minute qualifiers and three heats of racing for the GT sedans and F1 cars. 10 minute races for sedans and 15 minute races for F1's. No other local series gives you this much racing in one day !

Question for the Wing for GT, if you are using a Tamiya body you can use an optional Plastic Tamiya wing. How about if you are using a HPI body, can you use their optional plastic wing too? As you know they also do have optional plastic wing.

Rules for So Cal RC Scale Series !
Rules have been finalized for the inaugural So Cal RC Scale Series. In the spirit of keeping the racing a fun event (and of course it will be competitive). we have kept the rules simple. The goal is again, "realistic looking close competitive racing with lots of race time and an abundance of fun".
