Hey everyone

It’s me again!! While people are fired up about vintage after a cool enduro weekend and some thoughts going around about other potential fun enduros to throw in maybe late in the year, I wanted to also put out the proposal of expanding Stadium truck at the festival to include an outlaw time line like with what we’re doing with outlaw 2wd and 4wd. This also ties in with the potential of a truck-duro and looking at what we can fit in.

Currently Stadium truck consists of trucks up to around 96-97 and the last top trucks included in that are all variants of the XXT and the RC10T3. For the outlaw portion of the class, we’re looking to include all variants of the Losi XXXT range, RC10T4 and 4.1, Kyosho RT5, Traxxas Rustler, HPI E-Firestorm. Also happy to include some of the more random brands at that time like TQ racing SX10T and Team C TC02T which were just rebrands of the same truck. The important thing to remember is that the outlaw group in the class is rear motor only and a cutoff of around 2010.

If there are people that are interested in this era of trucks being opened up, then please let me know and if there’s other trucks that fit in the window, get in touch. The idea would be to run all of these trucks together, currently the motors for stadium truck are any aarcmcc legal 17.5 brushless motor in blinky mode or a 15T closed can brushed option. As a way of balancing out the outlaws, I’m proposing that the newer trucks could run any choice of the aarcmcc 17.5 (blinky), the hobbywing fixed timing 17.5 (Blinky) and possibly the hobbywing fixed timing 21.5 motor with turbo

So the next questions are, do we run an enduro based on the same group of trucks? Is there enough interest? Do we run the same motors as the festival? I think this would be a simple enduro too, where it doesn’t matter what mix of trucks and drivers, 90 second pit stops in case a team elects to run 1 truck

Cheers

Mikey

As you say Micheal, the cut off for the outlaw Trucks is 2010, But , the Traxxas Rustler is still in production, so would this still qualify for this class? The Class sounds interesting and it could be fun doing an Enduro for these Trucks.

Hi Dave

I'm glad you're interested in the truck enduro! I've actually had a similar query from someone else and unless anyone has any objections, I'm inclined to give the Rustler the green light for Outlaw truck and the Truck-duro. As far as i can tell it's not changed much since the original design so its like a rere but essentially its a truck from the late 90's that never went out of production. I think some of the newer ones come with wheels that are larger than 2.2 inch so the only thing would be to put the correct sized wheels on it if thats the case

Cheers

2022 Vintage enduro report

Hey dudes, here’s the big one, the report on the prestigious 5 hour vintage enduro that you’ve all been waiting for, who was the fastest, who was the most consistent, who won the grudge matches? Read on…

After exceptionally poor weather in the weeks leading up to the event, it looked as though a postponement was inevitable, however a few days break in the rain provided the opportunity to get the track prepared for the race and for us to get the enduro done despite a few rain drops during the race. The mantra was, if there’s a little rain, we’ll keep running. A huge thanks to Ron Curby, Pete Couper and Jason Hollis for coming down on the Saturday before the race and rolling the track and getting into a condition where we could race.

Race day and after the rolling the track had a lot of loose dirt/sand on top which made some great rooster tails and gave us old school track conditions, the side-benefits being tyre wear was minimal and it was easy on the motor temps. 7 teams lined up for this race, the defending champs The Dukes of Casso, Johnny and the Shakers were back for redemption, the Codgers were back again, as were Premature Acceleration, Formula None and Victorian representation was strong again with Team Hyper Sombrero featuring James, Andy and Lucas who made the big trip up from Melbourne for the race and Takis completed the team

Mikey qualified fastest for the dukes with his B3 then Dave Martin with his Cat XLS for the codgers so those teams had to start from the back in the race. Johnny’s team didn’t put down a quick time in qualifying so they started from pole and lead early with Andrew leading with the green RC10, behind him was a pretty feisty battle pack that included Shane from the Dukes with his TT powered RC10T, Dave from the Codgers (XLS) and Chris from Premature(RC10B3). These guys battled it out for a few laps until Shane had receiver issues that lead him to have a few offs then elected to pit. Meanwhile Chris with his B3 had broken free and set about reeling in the leader, Dave went with him and by lap 11, Chris had taken the lead and as these guys battled, it allowed Dave to cruise up to them and make it a 3-way fight, Andrew took the lead again on lap 26, with Dave moving up to second on lap 29 and then took the lead 10 laps later, much to the excitement of Brian who was cheering on the side of the track.

Dave pitted on lap 46 and sent Ron and his Technicolour dream-truck out for a stint and not too much later Andrew pitted and sent Scott Griffiths out with the T2. While all this was going on, Chris had pitted for Premature and sent Chad out and they were in 4th and James Knight for the Hyper Sombrero team snuck up to 3rd place through consistent lapping while all the other chaos was happening around him as he ended up doing the second longest opening stint. What happened to the Dukes I hear you ask? Mikey joined the race in 7th place after Shane pitted and was around 2 minutes (4 laps) behind the leader so set about the task of making up ground and as other teams pitted he was able to make up some spots getting up to 4th on lap 50 then passing Chad for 3rd and finally Ron for 2nd before having to pit for Jason to take over and resuming in 3rd place.

Ron pitted for the Codgers for Brian to take over and Scott for Johnny’s team pitted for Johnny and his RC10T to have a run so Jason for the Dukes briefly took the lead til a mainshaft issue sidelined the Terra Scorcher and Shane headed back out in 2nd with the Codgers still in 3rd.

Behind the lead trio there were some cool battles, Premature nipped at the heels of the codgers on several occasions during the race but a gearbox issue and a leaky shock with Chris’s B3 held them back a little and the scorpion was difficult to drive on the dusty surface. Cliff Lett had a good run, settling into 5th though I heard some better tyre choices for next year will help things. Formula none settled into 6th place, Steve’s XLS sounded like the slipper or something was working pretty hard in the drivetrain and I think it had some old school tyres but some impressive runs from Brendan George saw him record the 2nd fastest 2wd lap of the day

The Sombreros had a competitive outing, a mix of enthusiasts at varying stages of their rc racing journey, they brought flair, colour and laughter to the track all day and acquitted themselves well on the track. Not to single him out, but Lucas improved his average lap time compared to last year by 1.5 seconds, with track conditions as they were, a lot of the guns were over 2 seconds a lap slower than last year even using the same car so its more like a 3.5 second per lap improvement which is massive. Well done guys, competing in the right spirit, having fun and kept formula none honest all race long. We’re looking forward to having you back up at the 2022 festival and next year’s enduro

As the race carried on, the codgers drifted back a little and Johnny’s team out in front with the Dukes playing catch up for a lot of the race. Shane went out after the Terra Scorcher pitted and went toe to toe with Johnnys RC10T (often each team had a car of similar performance on the track at the same time) so the gap was still around 2 minutes when both teams pitted within a few laps of eachother and Mikey went out chasing Andrew’s RC10. A bit of good luck with traffic helped bring the gap down to 83 seconds then a CVD pin broke on Mikey’s B3 losing time and Jason headed back out while Scott and his T2 hit the track with the Dukes now 95 seconds behind. Over the stint, Jason was able to reel in about half a lap then pitted for Shane to head back out and then Johnny came back out with his 10T again and a slightly slower stop from Johnnys meant the gap was now 60 seconds and again, it was truck vs truck, the gap remained constant over the stint til Shane pitted and Mikey went back out in an unfair match up of a truck with a half used pack vs a B3 with a fresh pack, Mikey was able to bring the gap down by a lap over the 18 laps and then Andrew came back out for Johnny’s team.

Andrew came out just in front of Mikey so the gap was just over 1 lap and there were some fast cars around with Chris’s B3 and Pete’s B2 so it was on for young and old for a few laps and a bit of luck again through traffic saw Mikey get through and on to the lead lap and pushing to try and get away from the battle pack so after around 40 laps, Mikey ranged up onto the back of Andrew with the Dukes in sight of being able to take the lead. The two battled it out for a few laps, then an ultima slewed sideways on the main straight slowing Andrew allowed Mikey into the lead and skip away a little, but Andrew wasn’t done and fought back to retake the lead 10 laps later, but at least the Dukes were in the fight, or so they thought..

Jason headed back out for the Dukes as Scott took over for Johnnys team at around 3.5 hours into the race and those guys continued to battle for the lead for 8 laps or so til Jason’s Terra Scorcher broke an arm and after getting the car back to pits etc, the Dukes were now 140 seconds off the lead and seemingly out of the race. Shane stuck it out with Scott, then Johnny headed out and Jason went back out for the Dukes. Jason made up a bit of time, then Mikey went back out for the Dukes as Andrew took over for Johnnys team and then the big drama, with 3 laps in hand and only 30 minutes to go, it looked like Johnnys team were unstoppable but a dead battery in Andrew’s car meant a slow lap and slow pit stop as the team scrambled to get the next car ready, handing the lead back over to the Dukes and the gap was 7 seconds.

The Dukes had to pit again to get Jason’s drive time correct, the theory was the T2 truck wasn’t likely to make the full 30 minutes so this was a straight up fight between the top two teams. Mikey could not pull far ahead of the T2 and after some trouble with some lapped traffic, the gap was 10 seconds when Scott pitted and Andrew emerged after which Mikey pitted and Jason took over for the Dukes with 13 minutes to go. Incredibly this was a repeat of 2021 with Jason trying to chase down the ever-consistent Andrew and like last year, Jason put down some big laps to make up the ground. Andrew in his efforts to pull a gap actually recorded the fastest lap of the race in this stint while recording a consistency of .64 over the 27 laps and so Johnnys team crossed the line 4.17 seconds ahead of the Dukes at the end of 5 hours of racing. Well done to Johnny’s team, a fantastic effort after being right in the mix over the last few years, now on the top step of the podium.

So to the stats/grudge matches.

Fastest lap Andrew Sienniak’s RC10 30.284.

Fastest 4wd Dave Martin Cat XLS TT 30.372

Fastest Mid-Tier 2wd Jason Milward Kyosho Ultima 32.35

Fastest Truck Scott Griffiths RC10T2 540 31.311

What do we take away from some of this and in general this year? I’ll be keen to hear your thoughts!! But the track conditions seemed to favour the 4wds and trucks this year. Dave really has that Cat XLS singing now after refining it over a few years now where he was able to range up and take the lead in the opening stint and I’ve not heard any negativity about the TT motor and from talking to different people it seems to be a good addition and offers an incentive for people to run a 4wd.

There is something special about T2 trucks, they always punch well above their weight and even with the Johnson 540 motor in it Scott was able to record the fastest lap time, with Shane and his TT powered RC10T second quick with a 31.6 though all 5 trucks in the race were covered by 0.9 of a second on fastest laps.

The mid-tier 2wd battle was interesting, Ultimas, a Traxxas TRX-1, Top Cat, Kyosho Pro-x and a Dyna Storm were in the mix. Richard Bull and his Traxxas were the most consistent in this grouping but fastest lap and fastest average lap went to Jason and his nice Ultima with the triumph transmission.

The top 3 4wds fastest laps were covered by 0.3 seconds which is amazing given the range of different buggies from a Cat XLS to a Jamie Booth Egress replica from Takis.

On the overall stats for the enduro, this notches up a 5th win for a team featuring a Team Associated vehicle putting them in equal first place with Losi and Tamiya though Losi still leads the stat for most different models of their car taking victory being 5. A couple of firsts this year, it was the first Traxxas run in an enduro with the TRX-1 and it was the first time a team all using 1 make of buggy (Team Associated) has won the race

For next year we’ve added 2 points to the base points and I have done some driver regrades so all teams will have 2 more points to play with next year and some may have more

I’m keen to hear your own race reports of the enduro, how did you go? Will your team be back again and better in 2023?

Cheers

Mikey
