Default JORROC days

Just wondering who else is still left from those days. I remember trotting out my Kyosho Icarus to race against RC10s my first time out...

For those of you unclear what I'm talking about, It was the old track off I-55 in Joliet where the Dog Park is now.

I miss it a lot. I miss outdoor off road electric racing a ton, too. Those were great times in the summer growing up. My brother and I raced there as kids from 1983 through just about 1989 or so.

Still one of the best tracks EVER in this area.

jorocc was the shiznits! The spirit of it basically lives at leisures now, at least the tractor there and the old man that drives it. and alot of LH regulars got there start there, like myself, Mellow and even Sonny O. Who else raced there in its heyday and now races LH. lets have a hands up.

Wow that's a long time ago.
JC and I started there, when there was just picnic tables for the drivers stand.
I remember my old good friend Todd Tribbit, may he rest in peace, talked me into getting into the cars from the boats I was running at the time.

Anyone remember Stewert Kay?? He is the one that got SO mad in a 4X4 race that he through his radio down onto the ground from the then newly built drivers stand. I think some one from the hobby shop glued it back together, and not so good of a job, and had it in the case labeled "The Stewert Kay signature series".

This thread makes me smile.. THat does bring back some memories... Those were long days. Everyone parked their cars around the track and plugged in their chargers to their 1/1 cars.

I remember I actually got third in my first ever race. I don't recall the jumps being as massive as they are now though.

Ah the memories!

Things I remember:

-Ken Swanson ALWAYS showing up five minutes before the first round and STILL asking if he could practice.

-Racing with Jim Thorton aka "Robocop"...the tightend that played for the Bears(drafted in 87). Quite possibly the strongest man I have ever seen in person.

-Bernie....Nothing has changed!!!

-Getting there at sun up and talking shop with everyone on the latest greatest trick part or idea.

-Getting kicked out of Wendy's after racing.

-The invention of graphite/carbon fiber.

-Having 150+ entries EVERY Sunday in the summer.

-Having mulitple Race Prep(stock) motors that were water dunked and dyno'd.

-Making my first A main.

-The invention of super stock....which is now Modified. Back then 7 cell packs and a modified motor was the norm.

-Leon and his slider/universals.

-Picking up personal belongings along side the frontage road from the big tornado that hit Plainfield.

-The RC10 coming out.

-Holiday(Tamiya)buggy tires, Cox Scorpions, and the trailing arm cars that would be pure GOLD now.

-Driving my 76' Buick Lesaber(double barreled 400 cubic in) Custom w/cruise down from Elmhurst to visit my friends. People that I am proud to say are still my friends.

I LOVE this thread!!!

THAT Was the best part, Mellow. Something that will never happen again, because there are TOO many classes to run and too many different kinds of R/C car racing to choose from. I miss races with only 2wd mod, 2wd stock, 4wd mod and 4wd stock.

Maybe I'm just too nostalgic, but the lack of consistent turnout in ANY of those classes keeps me away from racing electric off road. Now, everything is Supercross style jumps, had pack clay blue groove surfaces that is essentially brown carpeting, and ugly, stinky, expensive, bloated nitro cars.

I have to say, though, if the rumors I hear are true that Leisure is going to be doing electric friendly outdoor layouts in preparation for the ROAR Nats this summer, I might very well come out of retirement for that. It'd be completely worth it.

yep that was my favorite part too. It was like racing a regional event every other weekend. And when making the Amain meant something.
