Default Restoration Projects - Polishing Aluminum

Hi All,

I'm getting ready to polish all of the aluminum parts on a Kyosho Ultima Pro I'm restoring, but noticed my scratched up Lost MTXL chassis looking pretty rough and started wondering how much of this I could clean up with some sanding, a Dremel & some polish. The scratches aren't all that deep, but they really look bad because of the color I think.

Do you think it is worth trying to polish this up? It's a bit of work to get the chassis off & really give it a go, so before I put that on my to-do list I wanted to get some feedback.

Thanks!

Hello sundevil,

That looks like a hard anodized chassis plate, so not sure polishing will do much more than highlight the gouges. Very possibly, re-anodizing may be the only solution. That will not eliminate the gouges and scratches, only blend them in.

But, before going to all the labor of a frame-off dis-assembly, you might consider taking the entire car to a local aluminum anodizing shop and ask about the process and what you can expect.

Hope this helps. Good luck on your resto projects. Cheers. 'AC'

I actually did manage to locate some local anodizing services, and they aren't as expensive as I expected. Thanks for the advice!
