Default UTRL 2020

Urban Turf Racing League (aka UTRL) begins the 2020 season with a Pace Truck Test Session, followed by a Pace Truck Partial Practice Session. Both successful.

Last year's beta Rules Package for the ahr43 back yard grass track emerges this year in draft form, and gets its own stand-alone sanctioning organization. Ten (10) races are sanctioned for 2020. Eight (8) oval grass track races and two (2) Special Tests, for a total of Ten (10) Events. Down from last years sixteen, but more manageable, with scheduled practices to fill in the gaps.

Last year's Safety Truck emerges as this year's Pace Truck. Rather a mundane beginning to the season, but had to validate the track for racing. That and over the off-month of December, Pace Truck got much need steering system repairs and a brand spanking new Reedy FT 17.5 power unit, and a one tooth drop on the pinion. Had to check all that out.

Cheers and Regards. 'AC'

Default Event One Rain Out

Last weekends season opener ended before it even began. Preceding week was drizzle and rain making for a wet, non-race worthy track. Last years track champion, the '1-Truck', suffered a DNS and recorded a single point as a Provisional Place 10 [P10]. That's the bad news. Good news is that it is now eligible for double points when it comes on the schedule for the July event as a result of the DNS rain out.

Come Monday last, as usual, sun was out and drying the track. In an effort to salvage some of the race weekend, ran off a Full Practice for Record (FPR) with the '2-Truck'. New for 2020 in the rules package, a FPR runs a full 65 lap event schedule, exception being instead of a 10 lap Qualifier and a 10 lap Race, FPR runs two 10 lap Qualifiers. Quickest 10 lapper gets time officially recorded and becomes eligible for the season ending Top Qualifier Medal and One Point added to season score. Rules package only allows for one FPR per season per truck, so '2' has shot its wad wasting its FPR on a slow track.

2-Truck ran consistent 1:28 10 lappers final event last season. Alas, not to be this time. Track was still damp and slow. Bad call on my part. Should have given the track one more drying day. 2 Truck could only manage a pair of 1:30's. Good, but probably not good enough to hold for season TQ. And then the other foot falls. Running a FPR locks in the chassis settings for the '2-Trucks' February event. No changes allowed for the event.

Here's the 2020 schedule in PDF attach below. Cheers and Regards. 'AC'

Default Media Day Event Two

First event of the year is always media day. Before launching into a race report for Event Two, here are two media shots: track front straight overview and banners and bunting at the start/finish.

Default Event Two - San Antonio ST GP

Rain stopped and track dried enough to get Event 2 in the books Sunday. "2 Truck" spanked the grass track oval with a 1:27 10 lap practice; then came right back to qualify Q2 with a 10 lap 1:29 and finish on the podium with a P2 1:28 10 lap time. That scores a big 18 points for the season lead, and sets the bar high for follow-on's. Event duration 1hr : 20min. 65 laps total.

Drove a conservative race with no push or pull on throttle position. She tracked great with only two excursions in the taller grass losing time - driver error there; lost concentration.

Tightened up the rules package points scoring for 2020. 5sec gap between placings instead of the 2019 10sec gap. Re-aligned the points spread based on most likely posted times based on 2019 race results.

Two images: 1) pits with TRX pace truck in the background, '2 Truck' foreground; and 2) winner media photo. Enjoy. Cheers. 'AC'

Default

Following two rain-outs in the first three scheduled events, pivoted to a flex schedule and adapted an entirely new racing format. Been watching motorcycle speedway racing on You Tube, and it really put the hook into me to try it on the backyard grass track. Four intense laps for the qualifier. Four intense laps each heat. Can run more trucks more often this way.

Here are qualifiers 1-3 and qualifier 5. Four AE qualifiers on the bench and the final bump spot for a four truck event was the venerable TRX Rustler. Believe that if you will. Beat out T4 No. 72 by one second for the fourth and final transfer spot. Cheers. 'AC'

Default Speedway Series One

Ran Round One for the first two trucks of series one yesterday and today. No. 1 Truck (RC10GTe / HW 17.5) put down a 4-Lap best time of 36sec. No. 100 Truck (TRX Rustler / Novak 21.5R) a 4-Lap best time of 38sec. Trucks run three heats - best time recorded counts for finish place and points award. Takes 40-50 minutes start-to-finish to run a Round.

Something interesting to note about launching this new series. Speedway motorcycles have no brakes, so I set all my drag brakes to 0 (Zero) or 'off'. Previous series I was having success with ~10% drag brake on all trucks. Big difference and overshooting the corners now into deep (read slow) grass is an issue. Losing time there until driving compensates for zero drag brake.

Action goes fast. Enjoy. Cheers. 'AC'

Default Series 1 Rounds 3&4

Thursday last, May 7th, ran off the final two rounds of series one. Qualifiers Q3 and Q4 ran their respective timed laps on what turned out a slow track. Neither were able to improve on their qualifiers and finished P2 and P4 respectfully in overall points standing. Surprise finisher of this first series is the TRX Rustler, grabbing the final podium spot with a P3 placing overall. Images below show photo op staging prior to the event. "4-Truck" is an AE T3. "2-Truck" is an AE RC10GT brushless conversion. Enjoy. Cheers. 'AC'

Default Series 2 Qualifier

The '43 Truck' bested five others in this mornings coffee cup qualifier. What I am calling a 'Las Vegas Qualifier', she cut the cards best of six with a 10 of Hearts and comes away with six (6) valuable Q1/TQ points and lead position for start of Series 2 Rounds 1&2.

Experienced heat exhaustion yesterday prepping for on-track qualifying. Knew I had to do something radical quickly. With barely 30min between sunset and too-dark-to-race, fitting in a full qualifying schedule and four rounds of racing drags it all out way...too...much. So the 'Las Vegas Qualifier' is the solution for a transition to sunset racing on the grass track for the next five months. It is a beta addition to a draft rules package, so have to just wait it out to see how it works.

Thanks for looking in. Cheers. 'AC'
