I just got the killshot 21.5 Torque version for my 21.5 class here locally. Can anyone give target temps and maybe a FDR to start with? I ran it for the first time yesterday at 3.41 and 60* timing and came off around 125* after a full heat. Found I was still lacking a little top end compared to others in the field.

Seems like your gearing and timing were in the ballpark. It seems you might still be able to go down to 3.1ish if your temps stay low during winter in Fresno. Also do they make a rpm version 21.5. Hobbytown is kind of a medium to large track. I found that in the 17.5 class at our hudge track at Norcal Hobbies the RPM version worked best!

They do have a RPM version I believe as when I ordered it they asked me which one I wanted. I have dropped the FDR to 3.25 but have not had a chance to test it yet. I also am not running a fan on the motor as of right now but do have one to put on. Just waiting to test the current FDR first. So the no no temp range is 170* right? Just not wanting to smoke it.

Always use a fan! And in summer time in Fresno I would recommend a Superior Hobbies 30mm fan. Worth every penny and takes 20* off motor temps. Killshots aren't motoirs that love the heat so keep temps in the 150*ish range.

Ok that is good to know. Will fit one to it now. Don't have the fan you are referring too but rather a 3racing high rpm unit to use in the mean time.

That should be fine for winter time! In my VTA I am geared at 3.0 with a 25.5 novak and my temps are coming off at 100*! So try your fan and gear at 3.25 like you mentioned and go from there. Brian has said something about a big race coming up. Do you know when?

They briefly mentioned something about it yesterday. But I was late so I was rushing to get my cars ready for the heats so I missed it. I think they were talking about the 2 day race if I remember. I think that is what you are referring to? 2 qual heats saturday and 1 more qual and mains on sunday. I will look more into it tomorrow and can let you know.

I tried searching but can't find much info on the D3.5 17.5 in 12th scale.

I have the motor with stock rotor and I like to start my tires around 43.5 mm. I ran a 53t pinion with 74t spur this past weekend and it seems like I lacked top end compared to everyone else. I move the timing up to 20 degrees and still seemed slower. I saw a few people in the 12th scale forum say they are using max timing on their motors, but i"m not sure exactly what that means. the temps were around 156 degrees.

Anybody care to help me sort out this "not enough top end" problem plus I don't want to burn the motor trying to figure it out myself.

thanks.

From what I had heard several guys at the track say is that the D3.5 develops a boost in performance when run right at the ragged edge of its critical temp range. So say 165-170* range it develops a noticeable amount of extra power. But even they say it can be tricky to find the sweet spot unless you know the car and where it already needs to be setting wise. They made no mention of endbell timing setting though. Maybe someone else can help provide the missing info?

That's a pretty big rear tire. But I'd say your under geared at least 5 to 7 teeth if not more.

Phil, i run one set of tires per club race. Stay off the boards and dots and there's not much chunking to worry about.

Brian, You neglected to mention that last week. That is or can be a pain. Here is to hoping.
