John Tag did you use to race at Trains and Lanes dirt oval years ago. If so I met you the last time I raced dirt oval at one of their last big races. I TQ'ed Stock and Mod running that R&D Hobbies Terminator. We ran silicone foams that race. If it was you, I remember you having an ERP motor zapper back then.

ghuber nice to see you had a good time. Oh my buddy has won 2 weeks in a row on those 4 cell packs. He said they really rip and make his bad motors fast. He has finally gone 39 laps at ths track and only with my 4 cell Surge packs has he done this. Nice!!! I'm still working on getting those 4 cell packs sold for you so I will be in touch. Oh yea thinks for the shirt. If I don't see you at Alpine Lounge I will be at the last 2 ORL races for Team Surge.

Like John said, we're going down to the ORL in Vineland in two weeks. Surge guys, we've got to get our stuff together for that. We'll talk more about it on the Invision board, so everyone should pop in there to add their input.

Man are we going to have fun at the last 2 ORL races then. Man I remeber that race and that fuzzy dude on your car. I would have to look at my jacket but I won the points at Denwick one year and they gave out jackets. I have grown some since then and my jacket don't fit !!!!

This is going to great. Look forward to racing with you again. T&L use to be a great dirt oval track in the day. I use to race with Rob all the time and help out at his hobby shop.

Racing with Jake Flurer is still a blast. He always has us laughing.

It is going to be great. Can hardly wait to hook and have some fun. Been a long time since I raced with anyone from back in the day at T&L. Sometimes I see Shane Kocher at the ORL pan car races.

Quick question for the Surge guys...

What exactly makes the fet zapping better? It is still passing current/voltage through the battery right? I assume that it is milliseconds just as capacitors are.

So how is using fets better?

Just trying to understand the concept.

Thanks,

Michael

Firstly, the big advantage of FETs is they can be turned off. SCR devices, once triggered remain turned on and can only be turned off by removing the voltage across them. The SCR method requires that the charge circuit is disconnected before the zap or the SCR will continue to feed the charging current into the cell. This in itself isn't a major issue but consider what voltage is present across the cell connector as the cell is removed! Ouch!

From a performance view, as a conducting switch the SCR appears as a voltage drop of around 3 - 4V in series with a resistance of perhaps 0.1 Ohms. The exact values are very difficult to predict in such a dynamic condition.

A FET is an ohmic device, it has no 'built in' voltage drop at all and the ones we use have an 'on' resistance of 0.068 Ohms each. The resistance is divided by the number of devices in parallel so with four FETs it would be about 0.02 Ohms or ten times less then an SCR.

That translates to ten times the zap current.
