ESCs and their max voltages
Have been in r/c for quite some years now, though I don't usually play in tracks or in the community, tend to play around my home area.
Have experimented with various ESCs in the last few years and noted that some can perform well over spec without causing problems. Decided to write up this info so others can have a cheap way to increase speed without spending more on aftermarket stuff+avoid the problems I faced previously. Please note an external switching BEC(costing under S$10 fully shipped from hobbycity)will reduce the load on the ESC and allow it to run more cells/hotter motors.
This is a list of what I have tried to overvolt without problems. Would appreciate if others can add to this list.
1. Tamiya TEU 101BK. 3S lipo 11.1v, external BEC. Silver can Mabuchi 540SH.
2. Traxxas VXL-3m. 4S lipo 14.8v, external BEC. 1/16 VXL stock brushless motor(will repeatedly thermal however after 3 secs of max throttle)
3. Castle Sidewinder. 4S lipo 14.8v, external BEC. 1/16 VXL stock brushless motor, Great Planes Ammo 36-56-2600 brushless motor.
4. Castle Mamba Max. 4S lipo 14.8v, no BEC. Great Planes Ammo 36-56-2600 brushless motor.
Anyone has tried on the below ESCs before?
If not I will try sometime on:
1. LRP F1 reverse
2. Novak Rooster
3. Futaba MC230CR
Also, some ESCs like the Quark 65A roadster and Quark 80A competition have given me problems running within spec. They are supposed to take 6S lipos but have invariably burnt out on me with a puff of smoke even with external BEC. Toasted 3, replaced 2 on warranty. Killed 1 more and left with 1 which I run on 4S lipo only without problems. Subsequently they didn't respond to warranty claims for the remainder. Castle Mamba Monster earlier versions also had problems. Killed 2 on first run(they just stop working, no smoke) but warranty replaced with their v3 version which has been excellent. Their customer service is top notch and they willingly send warranty replacements to Singapore at their mailing cost. Have total of 3 on 6S(1 on e-revo, 1 on e-maxx, 1 on vorza) which never caused any problems.

Just add abit, hope you dont mind hehe!
1. Novak Super rooster 3s 11.1v maxamps lipo, Castle creations BEC (good stuff!), on Hpi saturn 20t, firebolt 15t, Superstock RZ, and BZ.
Runs hot on the brake FETs if you don't use more than 1 capacitor. Either that or i brake like mad!

newbie question: why do you want to over-volt the ESC? does it give your motor more punch? or more running time? or are the 3S batteries cheaper?
