Question on Motor Timing...

i got a 11T double motor which is drawing 7+ amps at 4.8V. i suspect this is a bit high on the amp draw... i've actually shelved this motor at the moment cos it just keeps overheating the brushes... i already gear until cannot find a big enough spur liao!!! but the brushes still get overheated...

wat i wanna know is if there is a general rule to follow on amp draw??

for example, is there a specified max amp draw for 11T double?? or for any turn or winds??

also, if i time my motor to suit my amp draw... how will i know wat the optimum timing/amp draw is??

the motor (peak nebula) mentioned above is timed at the factory setting...

appreciate all suggestions...

Some suggestions:
a) Check if there is a comm short. One of the comm plates may have shorted to the shaft.
b) Check if the hoods are aligned properly
c) If using schotty diode, and if it is on that motor, remove it. It might have shorted.
d) Also same with capacitor, remove to see if there's a problem there.
e) My 11t draws about 3.1A (approx) at no load, 4.8V

For a start you can try to run about 12 degrees of timing with a 11t?

Also, undergearing a mod is also just as detrimental as overgearing (learnt that the hard way). 11t with 12 degree timing try run from 7.6 to 8:1 final drive. I run my 11x2 TI can with 12 degree timing at 7.6:1, but that's track dependant.

Default Motor timing

fren,
remember early this month at cck i was looking around for a motor timing jig but can't find any? well i just advance my orion chrome 11x3's timing by 1mm, it sure makes the car faster while not dumping using 3000hvs, and my brushes look ok, no discolouration whatever. gearing is at 8.5. i think your peak and my orion motor uses the same can. my motor was timed at the 1st guage initially, but i dont know what's the timing at the 1st guage. perhaps u may 1 2 look into alvin's suggestions about something shorting out somewhere?

i've checked the motor before... countless times... nothing seems to be shorted. the comm looks ok after i true it too...

i really suspect it's the timing thinggie dat's making it go haywire...

alana: so have u found out 1 marking on the motor can equals how many degrees?

so is it better if i...

a) adjusting the timing of the motor so dat it draws about 3.1 A on 4.8 V with no load (regardless of the timing angle)

or...

b) adjust it to 12 degrees (regardless of the amp draw)

also, where got cheap (but reasonably good) timing jig??

Alvin: maybe u can change the name of this thread to

motor tuning/discussion or something like dat...

since we oso dun have a thread tokking only about tweaking motors...

Rotating the endbell counter clockwise (with the hood facing towards you) by one notch gives you about 12 degrees of timing, 2 notches 24 etc. I don't remember the mm version of timing. If I am not mistaken, 8mm = 24 degree.

Only motor i got with a mm scale is my team atlas 23x2.

Oh one note, the comm when shorted has a value in mega ohms. A very high resistance, but a path for current to flow noneotherless.

Alana: One thing about gearing a mod. I found that undergearing the mod makes the battery dump faster.

dat's why i only just found out yesterday dat this motor is drawing 7+ A at 4.8V !!!

like dat better give all my motors a whirl to check things out man... !!!

Default Motor timing and gearing

hellangel - well i've asked around from various ppl on trak at last cck race, seems the ans given varies, depends on who u ask!!! anyway mine came marked at the 1 notch timing, so i just try my luck and advanced the timing by 1mm and it sure makes me car faster w/out overheating the brushes.

alvin - its a strange thing when it comes to gearing, i was using 8.5 FDR on the chrome 11x3, when someone told me my car my car wasn't fast enough. so i went up 1 teeth on 64dp to 8.36 and tried for 1 heat, end result is dat brush overheats!!! so i changed back to 8.5 for now.

forget about the markings...

i decided to calculate the circumfrence of the motor can and just divide it into 360 degree segments...

the motor can is typically 36mm...
circumfrence = PI x diameter = 113.10mm

therefore, 1 degree = 113.10/360 = 0.31 mm

so u can just multiply 0.31 to watever number of degrees u want and then just turn the endbell the distance on the motor can...

btw, using the above calculations, i oso discovered dat my problematic motor was ludicrously advanced!!! more than 20 degrees!!! from the factory!!!
