JOHOR BARU: A 34-year-old businessman drowned in a lake at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Skudai, while playing with remote-control boats yesterday.
Phang Kok Long of Senai, a dealer of remote-control toys, was attempting to retrieve a boat which had stopped in the middle of the lake when the incident happened at 3.45pm.
A friend of the victim said Phang was swimming back to the shore when he encountered difficulties.
"The water was very cold, and I believe he developed cramps. When he disappeared under water, we rushed to the security base nearby to get help."
Another friend said this was the first time they had used the lake to indulge in the hobby.
Phang’s body was recovered about 7.30pm.
A UTM spokesman said Phang and his friends had been warned not to use the lake, but it was ignored.
