It HUGE where I live. At the "Rumble In the Rockies". It was either the largest class or tied for it.
There was a great representation of each one, Academy, Associated, Tamiya, Losi, Kyosho, Yokomo, and Hot Bodies.
The Associated was the most popular. I own a couple of Tamiya 501xs, a Hot Bodies D4 Cyclone (still unbuilt) and a couple B44s.
IMO, the B44 is the way to go. Parts readily available and its quite a good car. Very smooth and predictable. Easy to set up, easy to go fast. Nice layout...
While I feel I drive it well I actually drive the Tamiya better. But parts are harder to get. I have to order from Hong Kong. Not bad considering I can usually get parts within a week and a half...'
So, I'd suggest the B44....

My best advice to you is to go to the track and be nice to people until they let you take there care for a run ..... drive everything that you can but try to go for the ones that look good going around so a rubbish set-up doesn't sway your judgement!!
Once you have done that go for the one that suits you the best ..... my guess is that will be the Lazer ZX5-SP

I agree about going to the track and seeing about driving some fo the vehicles there.
I think you really can't go wrong with most of the current 4wd buggies out there.
Each will have there own quirks, but should still perform.
Right now, if I was picking up a buggy, I probably would go with either the Academy SBV2 Pro, or the new Kyosho. No knock on AE, just like ability to use stick packs.

When you spend $350-$500 on a modern 4wd car, you are pretty much guarenteed a capable ride. The only question then is driving style. Will the desired car fit the way you like to drive?
As far as not wanting saddle packs, I think that is a weak reason for not getting a car. It is so easy and quick to convert your side by side packs into saddles. In addtion you can get saddle Lipos. And you can still use your saddle packs (ni-mh) in 2wd buggies or touring cars. Battery pack style is about the last thing I look at when making a car purchase.

Kyosho ZX-5 SP, by far the best car on the market right now. Strong and fast. It handles better than almost anything out there. better through the bumps and handles the bad landing that some of the others can't seem to accomplish.
Judging from the Rumble in the Rockies the Kyosho is the way to go.

The saddle design is awesome, and Tamiya and Associated did it for a reason.
To keep weight balanced.

Lately I've switch from a B4 to a XXX CR just because I thought it felt better for my driving style. I felt the CR could be driven harder (not neccesarilly faster mind you).
I have now decided to sell my 4WD B44 to get a Kyosho ZX5 after driving one. The B44 is an unreal car if you are a very smooth type of driver. It seems it doesn't like to be pushed and slammed hard. But that doesn't mean it won't do it, cuz I've seen it driven like a bat outta hell. I try to drive it like that and it snaps me in the arse.
Point is....I think it really comes down to your personal driving style as to what to get. As I get better, I am finding out what type of driver I really am, and what car suits that style. Most of the front-runner cars are awesome. The B44 just took the top 3 spots in the worlds, doesn't mean that it's for me, or you. I'm starting to realize this now. But it's taken awhile though!!
So as everyone has already said, and so you don't waste your money, make sure you know YOU like to drive it and it suits you. Don't follow magazine hype, or forum hype for that matter. That said...I'm getting a ZX5 off forum hype

tamiya db-01. its cheap. just add a slipper and shocks and its better than the academy. some think its as good as the kyosho. your lest expensive racer around! haha
