Default Best 2.4Ghz Radio?

Hi guys,
I'm looking into getting a radio for my brother since he is just getting into RC and needs one. At the moment I'm using an Airtronics M8 with Spektrum and I like it but I think its a little overkill for him. I was looking at the Dx3R but its a bit pricey. What other good radios are out there?

Is he getting into RC to race, or just play around? Has he bought anything (cars\trucks) yet?

He has used RC before but never raced. He gave mine a go last time and he was pretty good. He will be using an Exotek RC18T.

Exotek RC18T......just looked that up, looks really cool. Can either look at getting a Used DX2 from here or eBay.

Another option that has some initial up front cost is to buy a current Losi vehicle that comes with a Spektrum radio, and part it out except for the radio equipment that you want to keep.

I'm looking at doing this myself perhaps if I can get a good enough deal on a case of cars....

This is assuming here that you are trying to keep the final cost to a bare minimum.

I really like my Airtronics Mx-3 FHSS. Only downside is that the extra receivers are kind of pricey compared to the Spektrum. But it has all the bells and whistles without the exorbitant price tag of the higher end Airtronics radios.

I've been waiting for this to go live since I first spotted this thread and now that it's been announced I can

You may want to consider the new Spektrum DX3S. It's a sport-level radio that has a lot of the same features as the DX3R plus it has integrated telemetry. I'll have a link with more information later this morning but here's a link to the product page for now

He really likes the look of the DX3S. The onboard telemetry is a feature he finds interesting too (inquisitive minds eh!).

That Axon radio looks alot like the MX-3 radio. Wonder if it's made by Airtronics or Sanawa (SP). If maybe that could be a less expensive route for recievers!! I have a MX-3 fhss and really like it got 1 for son and he likes it. Big draw back is recievers are $90 a piece.

Another upside to the DX3S is the two recievers which come with it. My brother can have one and so can my dad (I'm getting him into racing =D). I'm going to see if my LHS have them in stock. Very cheap too: $240 for the Transmitter, 2 Receivers, Telemetry etc. (receivers and about $90 each on their own)

Will the DX3S bind with all the recievers a 3R does?? if it does that would be the deal. Read the thread about 3R binding to older dx rx and it binds to older newer and losi 2.4ghz rx. RX should be cheaply available for that!!
