X - 6. The New Math!
The New Math is here! We unveiled the all-new X - 6 2WD buggy as practice opened for the 19th MidWest WidWinter Championship in Columbus, Ohio on Thursday Jan 12th. Greg Hodapp ran five or six battery packs through his brand new magnesium prototype chassis and the car proved right from the beginning that it handles and flies extremely well.
The X - 6 will be a Conversion Kit for the AE B4, utilizing the entire B4 front end and steering as well as the B4's diff, trans gears, CVDs and rear hub carriers. X Factory will make the chassis, trans case, rear control arms, rear shock tower, and lots of "little" parts.
THE MOTOR IS IN FRONT OF THE REAR WHEELS with the normal X Factory 4 + 2 battery pack positioned sideways in the car ahead of the motor.
More info is at www.4wdrc.com. We're at the race in Columbus through the weekend. There's lots of work to do on the car and a race to contest. We've got photos and video, and both will go up ASAP.

Crazy. But I suppose the real question is will this really be an improvement over the B4? Obviously the polar moment of interia will be reduced from front to rear, although from side to side it will be increased. So it should go through whoops and such very well, will probably jump really nice as well.

So basically, it's a kit that uses everyone elses parts, except the chassis?
Whooda thunk?

Actually, it only uses the front end and dif. The gear case, rear suspension and chassis is their own design. I'm kind of surprised at the choice of laying down the gearbox and moving the engine forward. With the shorter gearbox the weight could be closer to the rear axles. They probably have a good reason. It would be silly to go to the trouble of designing a new gear case to make it worse

The gear box has been completely re-designed 3 times. The final design, on Greg's magnesium car in the photo, is far from flat. There's quite an angle between the diff, idler, and top shaft. This final design keeps the top shaft as low as possible while moving the motor as far back as possible.
Here in Columbus Paul is running proto chassis #3 and Greg is running the final magnesium proto, #4. Paul's car is the original chassis lay-out while Greg's final version has the motor and batteries moved 9/32" back. The re-design of the trans case was integral to this. Greg's car is easier to drive fast.

Did you try a more upright trans case? That would allow you to take the mass farther back. I wonder how noticeable the slipper/layshaft being up higher would be.
That's an awesome looking proto. Excellent job Chazz.

The motor & batts are now as far back as they can go. The rear of the chassis is now up against the front of the trans/diff support.

Looks interesting but can you fit a GTB esc in it??

We believe the X - 6 will be among the first cars designed with brushless motors in mind. The speedos will fit.
We're not sure about LiPo packs yet, but we're working on it.
