I nearly gave up on it but a friend kept telling me I had it geared wrong as he went through the same learning curve before picking the right gear ratio to make this motor rip and stay cool. Reluctantly I threw a taller gear at it and BINGO! it got faster and the temp dropped dramatically.
Don't give up on it as I am now a believer.

I always enjoy seeing pictures of the cars people are running so here is a couple pictures of my USGT BMW M3 GT2 body I painted. It's hard to get a good photo of the orange under florescent lighting, the outdoor photo with the VTA Camaro is what the orange looks like in person.

That BMW looks fantastic! Yeah, I would've at least expected a GM of some sort. Here's my old JL10e with an HPI M3 GTR body:
Our club currently has a class we call GT10. It's a spec class calling for treaded tires, GT-style body (non-ROAR touring car), and a brushed motor. We have two spec ESCs to choose from (Duratrax Sprint and Dynamite Tazer) and a spec Axial 27T motor. Batteries are limited to 40C, 5 Ah. The idea was to create an inexpensive, level playing field. Great for those bumping up from our Novice class. It's been a success and we usually have B-mains. Problem is, the brushed motor isn't rebuildable and it's not uncommon to go through two or three per season.
I posted up a link to this thread to get an idea from the "faster GT guys" if there would be any interest in USGT. It turned out there were several who didn't want to bump up to 17.5 Blinky TC, but wanted rather to keep the GT theme. Interest in VTA has been spotty and I think there would've been more if it was 21.5T instead of 25.5T. (On a side note, I still may build a USVTA car since other tracks in the state run that class). Now we've got at least six of us in USGT. This Sunday will only be the third time for us to run and we're still playing with FDRs.
I started out with a 4.0, then a 3.8 to be conservative. It got me to the same speeds as our GT10 class and my motor was still cool enough to touch by hand. I didn't run last week, but the guys geared up to 3.5, 3.6. This weekend, depending on our layout and ambient temps (we run outdoor on asphalt) I think we're all planning going taller. I'll probably go 3.38 in my Shuey, not sure if I want to try 3.24 just yet. We'll see how it goes and will report back in!
My Shuey Mi3.5 in action in the GT10 class with an EK Civic body:
Next body with either be a Mazda RX-7 or RX-8....

Kevin, I agree with NolanP there is a sweet spot and was in the same camp as you thinking my 21.5 D3.5 would always run hot. I even tried it on two different chassis (belt and shaft drive) thinking there had to be something wrong with my setup.
I nearly gave up on it but a friend kept telling me I had it geared wrong as he went through the same learning curve before picking the right gear ratio to make this motor rip and stay cool. Reluctantly I threw a taller gear at it and BINGO! it got faster and the temp dropped dramatically.

You had me at hello
No but I do have 6 other winds of the motor and none of them run "hot" I find it hard to believe that the 21.5 is designed that differently other than the legal diameter of the wire in the motor. We can take a look at it next time I'm there...I'll give it my magic touch.

I think the D3.5 21.5 is just a motor that runs hot. I have one and so does another guy I race with and they both run really hot. I geared mine at 4.36 FDR with max timing at it was coming off the track at 180deg. If I went any lower on the FDR it would just get hotter and really slow down if I took timing out of the motor it just ran slower and was still hot.
I run my SP 21.5mmm at 4.26FDR and it runs at 170deg all day.

The SP motor that Im using I have been using for 2 seasons now. I like to keep it around 170. Most motors aside from LRP seem to let the smoke out once you get them to 200 or 210. They dont seem to smoke on that run but a run or two later they will it seems like they will blow smoke. I think if you keep them around 170 you are safe this will give you some space if you crash and or use a ton of brake while racing with someone.

Don't worry the garages are filed with GM hp. We have 2 4th gen SS Camaros, I drive a Silverado SS, the boat has a Corvette LT-1 engine and when the wife sold her 540i BMW she bought an Impala SS. Unfortunately that means lots of GM V8's to feed! Makes RC racing seem like a cheap hobby.

Has a small showing of USGT-prepped cars yesterday (yet our GT10 class had enough for a B-main). Our track was setup on an area approximately 40x100' with wide lanes and fast turns. I geared my Mi3.5 to a 3.24 FDR, but was only nipping at the fastest GT10 class times. My car was coming off the track with my Novak Ballistic 21.5 @ 135°F, no fan. Ambient temps were in the low 70's. The car is capable and much faster than our GT10 cars, but it's the loose nut behind the transmitter that's of the greatest disappointment. I need to smooth things out and take tighter lines. Even our RD called me out over the PA system, critiquing my wide lines in several sections. Ugh, embarrassing.
Anyway, I hope more jump from our GT10 class to USGT soon. I don't want to burn up another brushed motor (although our spec motor is inexpensive), but I'm considering jumping back over to GT10. Just for next weekend anyway, because of the competitiveness of the class.

I'll definitely be there to run USGT this weekend, RJ! Here's a couple pics of my TC6 w/ Tekin RS Pro and Thunder Power 21.5. It was a GT10 car (our spec class that RJ explained earlier), hence the Axial stickers.
The roof is done in carbon fiber, but it didn't show in the pic.
And my old body that's been retired after lots of abuse. I have another one and it'll likely be my next USGT body after the white one above is retired. I kinda like this one more. Looks more realistic.
