Noobie with a 950
Hi guys,
I am entering the 1/8th on-road world from 1/8th Inferno buggies so I am very noobie with this area of RC.
I am thinking of starting of with a Serpent 950 kit paired with twin Futaba S9350 digital servos and a 9886 EFRA Nova pipe. Buying these items would set me back approx AU$1000-1100.
Notice I have not mentioned the engine? :P
Would it be okay to use my buggy engine, O.S. .21 VZ-B and learn to drive and handle the car from there?
Or is it a bad idea as the O.S. engine is more designed for off-road power?
I am really limiting my budget to below AU$1000, not to mention that I am a beginner and I don't earn that much from my line of work. (yes I know this is the most expensive area of our hobby but not all of us can afford everything)
Cheers

Perhaps you can consider looking for something cheap or used from Ebay?

Heh - I tried looking at EBay - nothing is for sale in the 1/8th on-road cars.
At least nothing is for sale that is available to Australia.
I think spending AU$1000 (U$720) is quite a good value to get a high performance, high quality car kit, 2 digital servos and a top of the line Nova pipe.
The only thing holding it back is the engine.
There is no point slapping a JP Black engine in the car if I cannot get used to the power and handling of the car. So may as well start with a milder mill - thats why I thought of bolting on my buggy VZ-B onto the 950.

The VZ-B should be fine.. good low end grunt

No offense man, with a budget of $720 USD or $1000 AUS you probably won't be able to get a high performance 1/8th. 1/8th is like the most expensive class in the hobby, correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe the $1000 AUS should be $1000 USD. Then you should start thinking.

Ducati998 - when I claim a figure and posting it, I am making sure it is 100% accurate or I won't post it at all. It is not something I pull out of thin air.
Let me break it down:
* Serpent 950 kit @ RC Muchroom U$520 incl shipping to Australia (U$470 kit only)
* (2) Hi-Tec HS-5945MG Servos U$140 total incl shipping to Australia from Rotor in Singapore
* EFRA 9886 black pipe (not polished) U$38 from RC Mushroom in HK
* Nova manifold to go with the EFRA pipe U$22 from RC Mushroom in HK
TOTAL = U$720.00
The pipe and manifold can go with the Serpent kit and should not increase the shipping fee - if at all since those components are very light.
1/8th on-road is the MOST expensive class of RC. But if you shop around, and look somewhere else - you can get extremely good deals.
In the super expensive Australia, the prices are:
* Serpent 950 - AU$1300 (cheapest shop here)
* Hitec 5945s - AU$165 each (also cheapest shop)
* 9886 combo - AU$190
Now all of this totals to AU$1655 which is close to U$1200. Notice the extremely large gap of close to U$500?
