Well, you might try Stormer Hobbies, I've seen their motors for about $50 there(for Reedy Ti-based mods, that is)......

I've never owned a Fantom mod, but I've seen some very fast ones. Tossolini was VERY fast at the Novak race! Troy from Fantom is a cool guy, and Bob Stormer (Stormer Hobbies) is also a very cool guy who I've met a few times. If I ordered online, I'd definately support Stormer.

My 13x2 motor is kinda pissing me off. It can only run about 6 battery packs, before the comm gets into a horrible condition and the brushes reduced to about 5-6mm

I ran it last night at about 1mm of timing, and a 7:1 final drive, and damn it ran super slow on the 5th pack!!!! Crapy!

I used to run a 14x2 Speed Gem 1, and even with mild silver brushes, I could get more than 20 runs before I had to do a complete rebuild.

Got schottys on the motor and the 13x2 brushes are low silver. I don't get it!

I find that brushes wear very fast when your comm is not in perfect shape. What motor is that? is it new when you got it? 7:1 maybe overgeared with the 13T and might cause the severe wear rate. You can go to Speedline and have Wuikiat true the comm for you.

Alvin, have it ocurred to you that by having 7.1 ration, u are stressing out the motor...
THINK HARD..... Low Final gear ratio = 7.1= OverGear Motor = Comm Problem = Slow run

Sounds like the springs may be too soft.

Gearing may be too high but it is difficult to comment without knowing the track.

Check the transmission is free.

If you are skimming the motor yourself get someone to check the finnish on the comm before you use the motor. Skimming the motor with a blunt bit or the bit set incorrectly will give a poor finnish on the comm which will have the effects you describe.

If you are using comm drops this may be the problem. Some are designed for break in only. Also if you use comm drops you must use them sparingly and clean the motor after every race or dirt will accumulate and cause premature wear.

7:1 isn't a particularly extreme gearing for a 13.
I regularly run 6.5:1 on one local asphalt track with a 13.

With the same motor I sometimes go as low as 8.5:1 at a local carpet track though.

You can't comment on the gearing without knowing the track.

Jack, let's let's just say Kelvin Kng was running the same gearing and i'm running it, with probable LESS timing...

Besides, I used to run 7:1 FDR on my 14x2 with TWENTY FOUR degrees of timing with no problems.... 20 plus runs on Fantom Low Wear Low Silver brushes...

dw: Springs. Doh, I will compare my 13x2 springs against my 14x2's springs. I have a feeling you are right about the springs... haven't gone into motor tuning yet I'm more of a suspension tuning geek ;-)

well. actually if depend on track.
the one at jurong... gearing it at 7.1 is abit stressfulll....
tight track.. not sooo good to be at 7.1
one thing to bear in mind as well...
driving style play a part as well

hmmm, let see. what work for KK might not work for you...
you can take his ratio as a guide or reference...
no fix rules on what to gear or so...
diff motor with diff brushes, diff spring rate also play a part...
not to mention how we throttle our car as well..

dw: I checked my 14x2's springs versus the 13x2s, although they have the same angle, the 14x2's are much stiffer... They came from a Tamiya Dyna Run Racing Stock motor.

I'm glad at race day I brought along a motor lathe.
