Whats the best way to tighten it onto the crankshaft without damaging the piston or rod?

screw the nut on finger tight. use a pair of channel lock pliers to hold the flywheel, and tighten the crap out of the nut. put a very, very small dab of blue loctite on the threads before hand and it will hold till you want it off

OK thanks but on my last engine the piston would also move up and down. But maybe it wont this time. What do i do if it does?

I mark the back of the flywheel with a black marker - then turn the crank shaft so the piston is at bottom dead center (BDC) then slide the flywheel on the the collet and give it a squeeze with my thumbs on the back plate. Screw the clutch nut on and tighten hand tight. Then using a pair of channel locks and a folded shop rag. I hold the flywheel and tighten to 25 to 30 inch lbs. About a 1/4 turn after it bottoms out.

Install clutch shoes / bell and have fun!!!

just stick the end of a fat zip tie up the exhaust port so the piston stops on it. tighten the flywheel nut a little bit till the flywheel collet holds enough on the crank on its own, then use the channel locks on the flywheel

good idea on marking BDC. probably comes in handy after shutting down the motor

By fat end of the zip tie do you mean the side with the block looking thing where the flat side connects to it? And should i stick it all way in or put the fat end near the edge of the sleeve?

Just use channel locks. This is really not that complicated. Zip tie does work but why add stress on the piston and rod. Not to mention you could cut the zip tie. If you really want something other than channel locks, then get one of these tools.

That would not work for me because i have the losi clutch. And the flywheel is not whats moving its just the rod and piston. Im not looking to go to the hobby shop

so your collet is not grabbing the flywheel?

Then use the zip tie or you can even flood the engine with fuel and it will hydro lock.
It does not have to be a zip tie. Just using a non metal material(plastic) I have used the end of a tooth brush before.

They do make tools just for your situation but I have found there are many ways to pull it off without spending money.

Just pull the header off and get something in there to stop the piston.
