Default TC4 Gear advice

Hi guys, i have recently acquired used Team Associated TC4, with a 17.5 Brushless combo by speed passion.
Drove it in its first race this weekend, and although i didnt do well, i really enjoyed it.
Some of the other guys there seem to think the car does not have a lot of top end speed. Around the corners i thought i did alright, only to be blitzed on the long straight.
I have the car running a 4.44 Final drive ratio at the moment, but i am not sure which way to go.
I want to get more top speed, with out putting too much unnessecery strain on my motor, amd with out losing any acceleration out of the corners.

I have just ordered a handful of pinions and spurs to try some different combos, but was hoping for a little advice.
The gears i ordered are 32-38t pinions and 66t, 68t, 70t, and 72t spurs. All at 48p.

Thanks in advance Guys.

Im not sure how long the straight is... or what speedo's they were using to fly by you with. I do know a 4.44 should be plenty for your average outdoor asphalt straight, if not a tad too much. Im running 64 pitch in a Tc3 (basically the same car at 4.756 FDR, 85 degree day) with a KO VFS-1 and im slower on the straight than almost any other car that runs a Tekin RS speedo.

The limiting factor is heat. Assuming all brushless motors are geared to 180 or so degrees in your alotted runtime... then having a speed controller that makes the best of that temp range is optimal. Just adding gear wont help you. Your problem is most likely a combination of hardware (speed controller),software AND gearing.

17.5 FDR recomended should be 3.5-3.7 but 4.2 should be ok

Thanks for your replies. I'm fair noob at this.*
So the lower the FDR, better top speed.*
Higher FDR more acceleration.*
Is this right???

Yes been in conversation with Ackie today, and hes got it all wrong.

He's changed the car to a 5.63 thinking it would give it more top end, but naturally this is going to reduce the top end.

However, I do feel that it could be the right way to go with the car, the reason being that although we have a 63mt long straight, I still think it will have enough top end and better acceleration out of the corners. The cars running a speed passion ESC and Motor, but I cant be sure which one. I also have no idea what settings he has on the speedy, but don't worry I think he has enough pinions and spurs to get the most out of this car for its current speedy and motor combo, it may just take a little while.

I have the same car and setup. All the guys in our club with a TC4 are using a 60T spur with a 35-39T pinion range. I am currently using a 60T and 39T for a FDR of 3.8 and it seems to get the job done with no real heat issues in a 5 min race. Were on asphalt parking lot tracks.

You can get both at Tower from Robinson Racing in 48p

In RCGT i'm running a 3.58 with good speed, half timing on my motor. New gears, so I need to do some temp tests on it. Before I was running like a 4.0, with maxed out timing on the motor, and pulling the car off at about 100'. You can probably gear up some more. One of the worst things about the TC4 is the extreme internal drive. My pinion is getting close to being as big as my spur it seems like.

Robinson 48p spurs come in 49t/52t/55t/60t, for all kind of gear ratios; switching to 64p is not really necessary!!! I think 55t to 60t , 3.6fdr should be best!!! Anybody using acer bearings , tamiya shocks, and front lcd drives ? These upgrades are sure to put you on the podium!!!!!

I switched to 64p mostly because its smoother. But where did you find those lower gears? I could only find 60t spurs. And sorry for the noob question, what does LCD stand for, what do they do better/worse and where can I find them? (if anyone still sells them.)
Thanks, Dan

Edit- its quite possible for me be running these drives and not know it because what I'm running in my FT Tc4 for drives that I got from another racer is different than what came rtr on my old one. Sorry for all the dumb questions..

The robinson spur gears can be found on their website ;the stock numbers are: 49t (#1849), 52t(#1852), 55t(#1855)...Also, LCD drives means losi jrx-s typeR drives (#losa3344) ; these drives stop the chatter that comes with using a front spool , but require some dremelling of the caster blocks. I think you guys can also try Litemodz cvds in front, if they make them for tc4s, they also stop chatter, give better traction, and stop breaking drivetrain parts!!!

I just read the Litemodz cvd thread, and I am sorry to say that they don't seem to work properly; they lockup a lot!!! The losi lcd drives are the clear choice here, and they cost much less!!! Don' forget to add a parma bumper to your tc4s...........

I ran a 3.58 this weekend and the highest temp I pulled it off at was about 150. Had decent speed. I'm gonna put a fan on soon and gear up to about a 3.3
