What about it Cole?
the HKU-1002 looks appetizing.

True. But I've ordered some more batts. And since I can borrow a lathe at the track, I'll get an extra charger also. Then maybe a lathe. Or an MI2. Dont know yet...

I bought the hku-1002.
I will bad mouth them to the ends of the earth if this is a bad lathe. Paided $100 for it. The price is cheap, hope the lathe is not.
Is it ok if I use a mabuchi 540 as a slave motor? (like the one that comes w/ the cheap tamiya cars?)

The Team Orion quick set lathe is awesome.

joe: yea, its good, but the price for TO stuff is not in my budget.
Anyone:

The motor that comes with the team orion lathe is a piece of crap. 11t with zero torque and way too much rpm. As long as the tamiya motor you have isn't too fast it will work fine.

Slave motors dont have to be awesome, just something to spin the armature. I adjust the speed with the Team Orion Motor Performance Monitor.
#55
nice... i will try it out w/ various speeds... and a old armature first
(but if if parts of the comm on the armature already cracked off, is it ok to try and skim it? will it hurt my blade?)

The xipp lathe is a good lathe and so is the Team Cobra lathe. You can't go wrong with either one. I would suggest a diamond bit, many people don't suggest the diamond but if your careful it will last a long time.

All this talk about lathes, aren't armatures only 10$?
Why don't we just buy new armatures every 20 - 30 runs?

.....a motors performance can fall off in as little as 2 to 3 runs especially with the high silver content brushes we all run for maximum power, and even faster on low wind modifieds.....so even for semi-serious club races, motors have to be cut very often to be competetive....

An arm will last most casual racers a season of racing. If you changed arms each week after 4 runs or so it would be very expencive and motor performance wouldn't be consistant at all.

Well, what I'm wondering is,
How long do the armatures really last, because I have run mine at least 12-15 battery packs without cutting it and I can't tell the difference.
We have a short track at the local LHS on Tuesday nights, so maybe it doesn't matter so much for me?
I'm just trying to figure out: If I only need a cut every 20 packs, I don't think people will get sick of me asking. Especially since 2-3 guys at the track are really nice and help newbies out with stuff like this. But if I need to recut the comm every 8 runs, then I'm betting the veterans are gonna get sick of little 'ol me pretty quickly here.
I have decided if I get a lathe I'll be getting the Integy AutoSuper Lathe. I like the idea of the constant automatic feed (like my real lathe at work) and it also comes with all its own motors, and a bit too. For about 160 or 140$ on e-bay I think it's worth it!
Uh, I think it's worth it if you guys really think I have to cut the comm for every race weekend (I play with the car about 2-3 times during the week and race 4 heats a week approx)
