Default Vintage Tamiya Grasshopper

1984 Grasshopper
So I took a trip down memory lane and am finishing up a restoration of my first RC car, a 1984 Grasshopper. It’s all vintage and per the manual except for rere tires, paint and one metal nut where a plastic one should be (need to find an old A parts tree).

It took some time to get back to its original state as I had made lots of ill advised changes as a kid. I even used to race on the tri-oval at Model Car World in Colorado. Pics coming.

A bit more info...this car was originally an mk1 Grasshopper (note the black tie rod ends), but over several years of hard use by a teenager, most of the mk1 parts have been replaced.

Need to add clear coat and decals and letter the tires.

Christmas of '84 , my first real RC , a Grasshopper.

Raced it on a carpet oval too, I remember using rubber bands to compress the rear suspension, so it wouldn't flip in the turns.

I ended up putting a Trinity Monster Horsepower stock motor in it, and a pair of foam tires. I raced it for a season on the indoor carpet, while the dirt track was frozen.

It cost $20 for a 6 cell 1200 mah Nicad pack and buying that second battery pack was everything to me.

It's killer that you got to restore your first car. Are you going to run it, or display it for the memories?

I may run it indoors a bit just to prove it works, but it will mostly be on the shelf. I don’t want to ruin the good memories. I installed the lights and driver figure this evening.

I agree, keep it on the shelf to remember the good times you had. Now get a re-issue and beat it up like you were a kid again. The quirky design flaws make them just as, maybe more, fun than a modern buggy that goes right were you want it

These were the days of variety in RC. I love looking at the old cars and seeing how many different ideas there were on design.

Here are some pics of the final project with tires lettered and reproduction decals. I really like how it came out!
